A memory......................

My porch this evening - September 10, 2011

I wasn't here on my front porch early in the evening of September 10, 2001.  Perhaps the roses were blooming and the moon shining above the house, I can't recall. Perhaps it was a fair night, cooling off somewhat after still hot days, typical here in the South at this rather lovely time of year.  Suspended between the torrid afternoons of Summer and the soon to be crisp mornings of Autumn, September can be almost perfect.

I flew into Raleigh on that quiet night with my DH and granddaughter Jasmin.  We had enjoyed a visit to Florida with several days at Disney World, that perfect world of vibrant colors, smiling faces, kindness, and make believe.  We fell into our beds, exhausted but happy after such a wonderful trip.

While getting Jasmin ready for pre-school the morning of September 11, the phone rang and my son told us to turn on the TV.....................the picture appeared just as the second plane hit the second tower of the World Trade Center.

The rest of this story doesn't have to be told here.  It is a memory we each share.  It is a day we will never erase from our memories.

The roses are named PEACE and they are blooming tonight.  A sign that hopefully we will never see such a day as 9/11/2001 ever again.

  1. Peace - that has to be the legacy of the terrible day - the legacy of all the innocents who lost their lives.

  7. What a lovely post Mary. We are flying our flag proudly today in observance of that tragic day 10 years ago. My husband was suppose to be in that building and was stopped while on his train in Hoboken. I didn't find out until 3:30 that afternoon that he was safe-he faxed me to let me know he was safe. We are spending a quiet day in observance and prayer. God Bless America!!

  9. Yes, peace for all who died that day and for those who have died since. I hope that someday, as John Lennon said, "the world can live as one."

  10. Hello Mary, Yes, we will be in Raleigh for a week. It is a busy week but I so want to meet with you and hopefully have lunch and some shopping at Suzanna's. At one time I had your phone number but I'm afraid I might have deleted the email. Please send it to me if it is alright with you. I will send you my cell number. We leave a week from this Thursday on Sept.22nd.

We all remember what we were doing on 9 11 don't we? We will never forget that day as long as we live. We have watched the ceremonies today and it is so sad. We lost a young man who was engaged to my niece's best friend. We met him a few times when he was in school with my niece. His name was Stephan and he was 32 years old. He was on his way out of the Tower when he and his coworkers were called back because it was supposed to be safe. He called his fiance Este and told her he was back in the office and all of a sudden he dropped the phone in mid sentence and all Este heard was the the sound of screams and the crashing of the Tower. Recently Este, who is now married, is having her first baby. It is a boy and she will name him Stephan. So many sad stories.

I believe your beautiful Peace roses have meaning in their blooms Mary.
    Wishing you a happy week.
    Love, Jeanne

  11. Though we were thousands of miles away, the utter devastation of that terrible day just cannot be forgotten. We were just about to sign for a new home in a new country and I remember feeling that I had absolutely no right to be happy at a time like that. Yesterday's memorials both in the US and UK were a fitting tribute and very emotional.
