History lessons.................

Following a quiet Christmas, Bob and I decided to take a little road trip.  We've been like ships passing in the night these last few months so needed a couple of days to get fed up with one another again - just kidding!

We've always enjoyed traveling by car, stopping to see things you miss from the the air.  Historic markers to be read, battlefields to wander through, museums to make one stop and ponder......just revisiting life as it used to be.

Yesterday, Boxing Day, we drove north to America's Historic Triangle in Virginia - Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.

The sun was shining and casting long shadows in the late afternoon. In 1781 the Battle of Yorktown ended the Revolutionary War right here. Of course being English I had to be nice and bite my tongue now and again!

Today it rained most of the time.  Indoor pastimes were the most enjoyable.........museums with movies, a cozy Colonial Williamsburg coffee shop, and a good restaurant for dinner.

We'll be back on the road tomorrow and heading home because there's really no place like it....is there?

  1. I don't believe you ever sit still, Mary! I'm glad you had a nice trip with Bob, it all sounds very interesting. But as you said, there's no place like home.

    Have a lovely week!

  5. I've been to Williamsburg and Jamestown and enjoyed both especially Jamestown. It's the only time I've been down to the more Southern states and I'd love to go again and go further South too. I've always wanted to visit Charleston and Savannah. Maybe one day....

Thank you for your most thoughtful comments, yes it has been a year since we lost Joy, but hopefully now her husband and children will start looking forward a little more.
We too had a quiet Christmas, I have been suffering with the worst cold symptoms for many a year, but I'm feeling better today :o)

  8. That sounds like a lovely little road trip.
We visited Williamsburg many years ago, and I have very fond memories of that Thanksgiving. When we lived outside of Philadelphia it was in a beautiful house that was designed and built by one of the architects involved in the restoration of Williamsburg. He loved our delight in the house and gave, as a gift, the original architect`s drawings of the house. I`ve always wished to build it!

  9. CW is one of my favourite places to visit, every day is a different day in History and it's always interesting.
I had quite a few wry smiles myself when touring Jamestown, the guide seemed to forget that there were Brits on both sides!
