Serious kitchen danger.....................

My dear, dear friend Vanessa had a frightening kitchen experience over the weekend! Fortunately she and her family were not injured. This is something I've heard of before. All cooks should be aware of the possible catastrophic consequences when using glass bakeware.

Please go here to Vanessa's lovely blog A White Barn and read what happened - it may help save you or a loved one from a serious kitchen injury!

I found this article online and, although a couple of years old, it does give insight and a video into what has been happening. Hopefully by now new glass bakeware is being manufactured to a safer standard, meanwhile you may want to consider trashing current pieces in your kitchen and even changing to metal bakeware just to be sure you are using safe pans.

FYI - Vanessa advised me that as she removed her glass dish from the oven it shattered before she even placed it down on any type of surface!

  3. Thanks for sharing this Mary. I visited her blog and left a comment on that post. I had a similar incident a few weeks ago with my 35 year old Pyrex square pan that I had added some warm water to. It cracked down the middle and thankfully didn't explode! I purchased a new one that had some warnings on the packaging. I also purchased new measuring cups with similar warnings on the package. One has to be careful I guess. Pamela

  4. I don't use a lot of glass baking dishes. I have dropped pyrex on my granite counters and it exploded. Thanks for the warnings. I am so glad to hear everyone is okay.

  6. Wow, thank you for alerting us to this. I've got lots of glass bakeware and most of it is old. I think it may be time for some replacements!

  7. Interesting! I have heard of the glass baking dishes breaking. Recently my husband wanted to put one in the broiler and I told him not to do it. Thanks for the information. I think I will be looking for some metal pans.
