"You need to rest"....................

Yes, rest is very important for each one of us.
Why do we often fight it saying there is no time to rest?

I'm my own worst enemy when it comes to resting.
I don't even like going to bed early. I usually get a
spurt of renewed energy when bedtime arrives and
feel I could start on some new project rather than
waste time sleeping.

But, rest I will now that I'm a bit under the weather.
My biggest problem with this condition is that actually
sitting or lying down, which then requires getting up,
is more uncomfortable than standing or gently moving about.
What do you think, like horses, can I just stand in my
pasture garden and rest..........batting away the flying
insects, admiring the flowers, watching the husband harvest
the figs? Can I stand silently as the grey fox crosses
through the neighbor's side yard, look up at the red-tailed
hawk crying mournfully from the top of the tall pine trees
across the street.......and yell at the birds trying to
peck on the ripening fig before the husband's hand grabs it?

Will this be resting?
I like the sound of it whether it qualifies as rest or not!
Unlike this sweet one sleeping on the front porch, I will
try getting some rest just doing what I can without being
in the actual state of repose myself. I think that will work.

  2. Rest is different for each of us, and you know better than anyone what brings you respite and peace. If it is standing in your beautiful garden, then that it what it must be.
Thinking of you and sending thoughts of gentle rest and healing.

  4. Horses have the advantage of two extra legs to balance on, but I wish you well in your standing-resting experiment, and may you feel better very soon. I'm sorry the trouble has flared up again. Just being out in nature can be healing too.

Thanks for the fig jam tip of grating the peel and squeezing the juice. Due to travel and a touch of illness, I have not been around to harvest the figs and most of them have gone to the critters this year. I could probably still salvage enough for a pot full of them to make jam but don't have the will to tackle that project and several hours of cooking involved. Our tree is kept pruned to about ten feet tall but always has more figs than we can deal with. I just let it all go this year and they are nearing the end of their season now.

Hope you feel better soon, Mary.

  6. Hi Mary,
Sorry to hear that you are under the weather -funny thing about rest -I say whatever feels best for you - personally I like to rest while doing a little something I love to do that does not feel like work - sounds like standing in your garden as an observer is working for you.
    Hugs and healing prayers,
    Erin and Bentley

  8. I hope you get all the rest you need in order to get better. I am like you, though, my own worst enemy when it comes to resting. I could stay up all night if I wasn't worried about trying to stay awake for work the next day. Please take care. Sending healing thoughts your way!

  10. I'm sorry that your condition is flaring up, Mary. Rest is sometimes hard to manage. Sometimes I find that moving slowly and deliberately through my home and garden is restful. Hoping and praying you find relief.

  14. I'm not sure it is rest but it certainly it is relaxing and renewal and fuel for thought and creativity. Make sure as you rest in your garden you have your camera close at hand.... Soak up lots of sunshine too. Wishing you well soon dear lady.

  15. You know what is best for you. If you are resting while standing and gently walking about, then you are resting. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make all of your pains go away.

  16. I had to go and read all your posts that I missed because I knew you would have beautiful pictures – and you did. You take great pictures of birds and the views of Kamchatka and the Bering Island were impressive. My fig tree is covered but the figs are still green – I hope the birds won’t eat too many!

  20. I am so sorry that you are feeling unwell, and that the very condition requiring you to rest actually make it difficult to do so. I wish you the peace of your little angel, and that soon you will bounce back and the old Mary will be back again.

  21. Oh dear Mary, I do hope you are feeling better soon. I always believe the body tells you what it needs, you just need to listen. If it tells you to rest, then rest. I too am like you, I seem to come alive around midnight and want to achieve things and create new projects. NUTS!

You've written a beautiful post and I have a lovely picture of you swanning about your garden, directing Bob as you do!!!

  25. Oh dear, please take care even if you have to rest standing up.
Maybe go in your gazebo and rest there away from the mosquitoes, but
still witnessing the goings on outdoors. Praying you feel better soon.
