A Touch of Yellow. . . . . . .

There were just two in bloom, gracing the bare and dull garden yesterday.

The first daffodils of this new year.
Pushing up through the cold earth to add a little color to my week ahead.
I cut them, added a few stems of fragrant rosemary, knowing freezing rain, sleet,
and perhaps some snow will be arriving later today.

A house with daffodils in it is a house lit up, whether or no the sun be shining outside.

  1. Hello Mary,

Your little touch of yellow is so very cheering!

How brave these flowers are, pushing through the near frozen ground. They fill us with hope that we too can be brave no matter what life may put in our way.

  2. We are leaving your wonderful area this morning; just in time I think. Had a cold birthday weekend with our Grandson. Hope the snow and freezing rain will not be too severe. Love your daffodils Mary.

  3. Can you hear me sighing Mary? What a beautiful sight this morning. I adore the colour yellow and painted the bedroom in the mouse-house a mustard shade. Enjoy your flowers. Deb

  4. A perfect quote for your post today. The daffodils look so bright and cheerful indoors as we anticipate the wintery weather.
The last time I looked at my daffodils they were about halfway up with a few buds showing. You're ahead of us it seems. I like how you paired them with the rosemary. Very pretty mix of textures.

  5. Mary, I went into the garden yesterday and it is so painfully close! The daffodils are up and the heads are about to burst... but not quite there yet. I can't wait to fill my house with yellow sunshine. x

  6. How lucky to have your daffodils starting to bloom! We are waiting for the snow/ice storm to hit. It is predicted to start around noon.

  7. The daffodils have announced the beginning of Spring in your garden and their beautiful trumpets bring sunshine into your room!
    Hope springs eternal!

  8. Oh, how beautiful, Mary! I love the pop of color that these flowers bring into your room. I won't be seeing daffodils popping up here for at least 6-7 more weeks.

  9. Gorgeous color! The new header makes me crave springtime, too! Mmm.. I adore fresh rosemary. I see bits of sleet/snow/rain falling delicately from the sky right now -- hope you have something warm in mind for dinner (and perhaps a nice bottle of Layer Cake?) -- stay warm and safe! Will post the link to the polenta recipe on my blog today! xo

  11. LOVE your touch of yellow. So far mine is outside my office window. With the wind blowing them, I am wondering if I will need to pick some. They opened up this weekend and are just gorgeous. They make me smile.

  12. Amazing that you found two daffodils just before the storm arrived. Just what you (and we) need to see to get us through this week.
We have about 3-4 inches of snow thus far, I think. I had to shovel a bit when I went out to feed the birds this evening.

  14. Sweet! I had an iris bloom last week and saw a few more blooms ready to open soon. Mother Nature is teasing us with a hint of spring while bringing back the cold of winter. Stay warm!

  15. Hello Mary, Your daffodils are a touch of brightness on this cold icy day (I read your email before coming to your blog). I love adding rosemary as filler/greenery to vases, too. It grows so quickly and smells so wonderful. Stay safe and cozy indoors!

  16. That is one of my favorite sayings about daffodils. I have a lovely bouquet that Don brought me - they indeed do brighten up the house, with so little effort. Yours are sparkling. Take care in the cold weather.

  17. Oh, how I love daffies! Can't wait until I get some blooms. Perhaps in another week, after all of the snow and ice are gone.
