The Daily News ~~~~~~~~~~~

Opening the front page this morning was somewhat ominous. . . . . . . not that
we weren't prepared.  But 'life-threatening' puts a different take on Winter weather.
It's not often we here in the southeast see headlines like this.
It has been bitterly cold since Monday when the first Arctic front
brought that blanket of ice. Schools, and many businesses, are still closed.
School buses can't take chances with so many young lives on slick side roads,
even though major thoroughfares are mostly cleared and sanded.
We have not left the cottage since Sunday - cabin fever has not kicked in yet.
Does this mean we are we showing our age?

We had a light snowfall yesterday afternoon, while bright sunshine flooded
the garden, making everything bright and beautiful. . . . . . .but somewhat eerie.
Even the squirrels ran and hid in their trees, and all the birds disappeared for
a while. It was rather otherworldly.

This morning the sunshine is gorgeous and there is not a
breath of wind - all this will change.
Tonight will be a killer.
Our low is predicted to drop to 6F (-14C) perhaps
an all time record low for February around here.
Soup is on. Firewood stacked at the door. Taps will drip.
Netflix should arrive - it's running late as mail missed a delivery day.
Extra blankets, throws, and cashmere covered hot water bottles at the ready.
We are prepared.

Take care if you're experiencing this freezing weather in your neck of the woods.
Florida, Arizona - you are beginning to look even better - should we move?

  1. Here in southern Indiana it was minus 6 degrees this morning & now a balmy 3 degrees! And we have about 8 inches of snow on the ground. Weather advisory: WIND CHILL ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 AM EST FRIDAY...

    * WIND CHILL VALUES OF 15 TO 24 BELOW ZERO AND POSSIBLY LOWER
    ARE EXPECTED THROUGH MIDDAY FRIDAY.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND WIND WILL
COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST
BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. IF YOU
MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS...MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES.

    I think I'll stay indoors! :)

  2. 15 degrees here right now with a low expected of 0 degrees tonight. We have our landscapers outside chipping away the ice on the driveway. Looks like it will not warm up here until Sunday. It sounds like you are nice and cozy!

  3. Do take care. I have never lived where it snows like that. I can understand the otherworldyness tho and the quiet.W
Whenever I have been in snow I have gone to the snow then later left....never lived with it covering my garden driveway and house. It always surprises me that kids have to miss so much school. Do they make up the days by taking extra days from the summer holidays?

    1. With this ice storm and the unusual low temps. the kids now have several school makeup days ahead - usually taken from the Spring Break holiday - which parents get furious about if they've made travel plans for a family trip!

Snow can be beautiful and fun, ice pretty but treacherous!
      Mary -

  4. I think everyone is talking about the bitter cold right now. It was -12 here this morning with the wind chill of -27! Doesn't stop anyone around here though...everyone is out and about and up to their usual. Us Chicagoans are plenty used to this kind of weather - unfortunately. But when I say anyone and everyone, I'm not included in that, lol. I'm not going out unless I absolutely have to. I've been holed up for two days. I won't even go out to get the mail! Hubby and I have a lot planned for this weekend, so I'll be "out in the world" whether I like it or not.
PS - I love how the media sensationalizes everything to get your attention..."life threatening cold"!! OK, maybe if you're outside for awhile and not bundled up! Otherwise, going to and from work or running errands won't kill anyone. ;-)

  6. Brrr. I'm glad you have the sense to stay indoors. Ice can be so treacherous, and is so different from snow. I grew up in the northern part of our province and walked home from school in those temperatures, but we were dressed properly and well equipped. Soup sounds perfect!

  7. Oh my! Stay warm and cozy with the throws, hot water bottles, and tea.
Take care. Still very mild temps here. I think winter forgot us here this year,
but not sure I would want those temperatures you are getting either.
    Sending warm hugs, m

  8. It has been bitterly cold here too. I know it was below zero the other day. And it was 3 degrees when I took the pooch out this morning. Another snowfall, followed by another ice storm, is supposed to happen tonight. Sigh. But the power has stayed on, and I'm praying that it continues. Hope all is well with both of you!

  9. Oh dear Mary! Hope the forecasters got it wrong for your neck of the woods. I have seen some amazing frozen images on TV from the States. Keep cosy, we have not seen any snow at all this winter but you know the old saying 'never say never' I am keeping my fingers crossed that it stays away.
