Art Class -

Do you buy art?
I'm always on the lookout for small original paintings of flowers, landscapes, coastal and country scenes. Both my budget and empty wall space are limited. Looking for these in flea markets and thrift shops, where prices are often affordable, I have to admit not many have 'spoken to me' over the years.
Saturday I spent about an hour at SuzAnna's AntiquesWeather was pleasant and the shopping crowd impressive. Everyone wants to get out and about on a good day in February when Winter has become rather tiresome. Thoughts of treasure hunting and home projects takes over for those of us who love the hunt.

What do you think? A still life in acrylic on board measuring 24 X 20, and it definitely spoke to me! I went back several times to look and each time I loved it a little bit more. I was able to visualize it without the somewhat dismal frame which had been painted a tan shade and then glazed with something which didn't work with the flowers. I asked Susie if I could just purchase the painting and leave the frame behind and she agreed, so Jasmin (my granddaughter who works there) removed it for me and wrote up the ticket for the agreed price of $35 which I thought was a bargain.

Once released from the frame this painting was even more lovely.
Something about way the poppies are arranged - well not arranged - which
is the way I love to display real flowers.

For now I have placed the painting on the mantel which will eventually
be rearranged for Spring. Note my flowers from Valentine's Day are
still beautiful - thank you Bob and Trader Joe's.

Our weather has turned chilly and wet again. This painting is brightening
up the north facing room and I'm really pleased I decided to purchase.

  2. Love that painting without the frame. I attend art classes and have so many pieces stored as everyone in my family has several pieces. I love acrylic better than oil paints. They take too long to dry and are so messy. Your mantel looks wonderful.

  3. It is a lovely painting and it looks wonderful on your mantel. I love seeing pictures of this room. It looks so cozy. I do love buying art. In fact, when we travel - even to Italy and France, we have brought paintings home.

  4. Yes , we/I buy art. Often when on trips .. something to keep forever as a memento of that trip. We have a few things from years and years ago. One was an oil painting ,done by a man whose "pin up" girls were used as Mens Magazine Covers , in the 1930s .. We bought her for less than $100- She was bought by an art dealer in Soho NYC for over 10 x what we bought her for. :) And my husband bought a lithograph in Paris, when he lived there, way before I met him and that I still have and that is worth quite a lot ... time makes a difference in a lot of things .. he was able to afford it years ago .. we would not have been able to buy it now ~

  5. It's absolutely lovely, Mary. I find the colors and the casual arrangement most charming. Charming is also what I say about your room. I don't think I've seen a photo of this space. It's warm and cozy, and your white tureen collection is stunning sitting on the dark shelves.
Good find, Mary. I'm happy you took it home.

  6. You did good Mary. I love to buy paintings, prints and such and have many of them in my booth as I just have too many. It is hard to select the ones for sale. None are worth a great amount. I nearly took a large old seascape/ship off the coast of Cape Cod down to make room for others, and it sold that day. Glad I didn't.

  10. The pink poppies look very at home in your living room. I like looking for art, and it's hard to find just what I like. We like to buy something that reminds us of our travels - a watercolor featuring some of the places we've boated to, another of a scene from Ecuador, and another small watercolor that I purchased from a street vendor in Salzburg. It's fun to have memories that go along with the art.

  11. Very, very pretty and I think the removal of the frame was a wise move.
I like the way the eye moves from the painting right to your Valentine's bouquet. A most welcome sight on this dreary day.

  14. I love your thrifted painting - so beautiful! It adds the perfect spring touch to your mantel. I've found beautiful art pieces at thrift stores, but it's been awhile. I'm done collecting as I already have too much. But it doesn't stop me from looking just in case I find something I absolutely have to have. ;-)
