Lifelines in a storm. . . . . .

I have weathered storms. . . . . .some really big ones at sea, including the infamous Drake Passage, the roughest ocean in the world! You can read my account HERE where I tell about that wild crossing on my return to Ushuaia, South America from Antarctica in 2013. That body of water, which takes two days to cross, is the treacherous stretch of the great Southern Ocean between the tip of South America, Cape Horn, and the northernmost reaches of Antarctica.

Severe weather warnings such as we are receiving here today, always set my nerves on edge here on land. Over the years I've lived in North Carolina I've experienced numerous hurricanes, tornadoes, tremendous ice storms, 24 inch snow falls, even a small earthquake. In two hurricanes I've been inside the cottage as huge oak trees fell on the roof and demolished my car in the driveway. In two completely unexpected tornadoes, I was close, very close, to where they touched down in nearby neighborhoods causing horrifying death and destruction.

Fingers are crossed for today as a severe storm system impacts the southeast US. So far we are on a watch for damaging winds, heavy rain/hail, and the possibility of tornadoes this afternoon. Praying everyone will remain safe, and that all have a secure place to wait out any severe weather conditions.

Be back soon with happier things to share hopefully. Weather can be quite stressful, and weather reports such as we are getting today, unnerving to say the least!

  2. Shackleton - monster waves - Drake Passage, three reasons not enough money in the world to send me there. Your adventures I'll just have to read about. It has been warm and last night was snowing. Crazy as it will be 70 this week. Mother Nature is playing tricks. You are a brave Lady Mary.

  9. Well for a change, we might get some rain but it will turn bright and sunny .. it was dark and gloomy today but no ice. Be very smart and stay home. Even up here, people just drive like it is normal out there and put everyone else at risk .. when I hear it is going to be stormy, I go straight to the store and buy milk etc even if I have it in the house already .. I make sure I can be snug at home during the worst of the weather.
This is one big reason why I am moving to Florida. I am just so done with the ice snow cold dreariness of living up here.
    Stay safe ...

  10. A tornado watch would be very unnerving Mary and I hope you are safe there. Do you have a basement to hide in or would you run to your bathtub? When we had the post tropical storm Arthur 2 summers ago the wind was terrible and I admit was was afraid one of our trees would fall on our house or garage or the front window would blow in. I finally opened a front and back window slightly to take off the pressure and it worked. Of course we have terrible snowstorms and blizzards and ice storms too. In fact we are having freezing rain here tonight for many hours so I'm hoping all will be safe. Tomorrow will be springlike with rains again then back to normal cold after that. The weather is really wacky and scary. Take care and I hope you have a safe night. xx Pam

  12. Hoping you are staying safe and sound, Mary! That was quite a story about crossing the Drake Passage. Quite terrifying! Today in my neck of the woods, we have howling, icy winds and a little bit of snow.

  13. Mary, I am praying for a calming of the storms and for those unfortunate folks who are affected by them. Such weather as we are having is unnerving indeed. Stay safe.

  14. I try to get a craft to keep me busy when it is storming, but sometimes find that to be not enough distraction. I'm glad we mostly have just wind and rain - rarely thunder and lightening and in our area - never a tornado. I think it is too mountainous for the tornado to get up any speed like they did in Kansas. I don't miss that. Stay busy and stay safe.

  15. Since I am slow to visiting I am glad the worst is over. Wine and two glasses were a good thing in the closet.
