All that glitters . . . . . . . .

Interested in having a little chat about jewels?
 Specifically our own jewelry.
Do you wear jewelry?
Gold, silver, platinum?
What do you gravitate toward, the four most precious stones - diamonds,
emeralds, sapphires and rubies, semi-precious gemstones, pearls, or just
sleek beautifully crafted metals devoid of glittering gems and
other embellishments?

Do you wear large items such as pendants, cuffs and pins.
Bold earrings dangling close to your shoulders, or classic studs?
The latter, not quite statement making but always neat and tidy,
and as my mother would have said, ladylike!

Some favorite pins - two sterling/enamel center ones made by a jewelry
designer friend many years ago, pewter 'colophon' design on right from
the NC Museum of Art gift shop, diamanté evening clip
brooch perhaps circa 1930's which was also from
my mother.

How about one of my favorites, the ring.
Besides the ring or rings worn on the left hand,
what other rings do you enjoy wearing for fun?

My personal favorites are usually in silver, although my wedding
and diamond engagement rings are gold.
I always wear one, sometimes two, silver rings on my right hand and
have a fun collection including plain sterling ones made by a friend,
a heavy silver one with a beautiful pearl from a Barcelona jewelry designer
whom I met and purchased from on a Baltic cruise on the Queen Victoria,
 and several others.

My most-loved ring is the Queen Victoria 'seal' (center above) which
belonged to my mother. It was given to her by Sir Winston Churchill's
second daughter Sarah when they served together in the Royal Air Force
 during WWII.

Why am I playing with my jewelry?  I'm thinking about what to pack
 when I travel in May.
Over the past year I've downsized and dispensed with some of my
costume jewelry. Some had tarnished or looked tacky, and I knew I would
never wear it again. I kept my precious, to me, and more valuable pieces,
and a few of my inexpensive pieces picked up around the world because
they bring back fond memories. . . . . . . for instance, the blue and grey
pendants above were bought in Ushuaia, the southern most city
in the world - on my way to Antarctica.

Do you travel with your 'good jewelry' or take inexpensive pieces
in case of loss or even theft?
None of my jewelry is priceless or even very valuable, other
than my diamond which is covered on my insurance policy!
So I admit, I travel with what I love and enjoy wearing.
This upcoming trip I will be downsizing on the clothing I take
so I will also be more likely to take less jewelry.
In fact I recently bought this at Kohl's. . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . a really small, space saving, travel jewelry case
(reads 'Little Treasures') which I'm hoping will take just
the correct amount of glitter!

OK, this post is all zipped up. Not packing yet but starting to look through
the closet. It won't be really cold, however, being very familiar with
the climate of our destination, I know it can change very suddenly
  and may be damp!

  1. Not a jewelry gal...rarely wear anything but a ring. I love to see women wear jewelry, though. I think it’s beautiful.

  2. Wait a minute! Did I just confess to running around without a stitch except for a ring? Yikes! 🤫

    1. Penny, you always look perfect. I love pearl studs - have other pearl earrings but might get just studs too as they go with everything.
I'm trying to minimalize my jewelry - just don't need as much anymore!

  4. Before each trip I would look in thrift stores for one stunningly sparkling piece, necklace or earrings, to take for a fancier evening meal. That way even if it was stolen it was only a few dollars. We pack really light so jewelry is a brightener and about the only time I wear any. I also never took my good rings - wore a thrift shop find instead. That way I had no worries on the trip.

  5. I love jewelry! I tend to gravitate towards silver, but I do wear gold once in awhile. I happen to have on gold hoops right now. My wedding band is gold also, but I wear a silver ring or two on my right hand. I love bracelets, too...mostly silver, pretty beads, or pearls. My husband loves pearls, so he has bought me pearl earrings, necklaces and bracelets. When I travel (which is rarely), I usually only take what I'm wearing. Sometimes perhaps a couple of changes of earrings or a necklace, but that's it. I don't want to risk anything getting lost or stolen.

  6. I love this post, so fun to read about your jewelry and others and well. I personally love white gold, sapphires and lapis. Oddly enough even thought I have some very nice pieces I rarely wear it and if I do it is my wedding ring, and a bracelet or a statement necklace.

  7. What a great post. You have some very pretty pieces. I wear my gold and diamond ring on my left hand, and sometimes a silver with blue topaz ring on my right. I always wear earrings, pearls - studs and drops, small gold hoops, square silver. Sometimes I wear necklaces, not very chunky, and the occasional bracelet. I'll take 3 or 4 pairs of earrings on a trip, and perhaps a necklace or a bracelet. I tend to wear more scarves as accessories.

  8. What an interesting post with another glimpse into your life, Mary!
One of my most valued pieces (both in monetary and emotional terms) is a string of real perls my grandmother let me choose at her preferred jeweller's here in town. She was still fit and healthy then, and I was in my early twenties. She said she wanted me to have something to always remind me of her. I do not wear the pearls all that often, but sometimes I have a "phase" when I wear it regularly for a while. Other than that, there are a gold and a silver chain to wear pendants on, one of which I received as a baptism gift when I was two years old.
Since O.K. entered my life, he has been giving me some beautiful jewellery made of Murano glass, a set of earrings, necklace and bracelet, in my favourite colours of light blue and gold.
I always wear earrings, sometimes dangly ones, sometimes just simple (real) pearl studs or small gold rings. Rings on my fingers tend to annoy me after a short while, much as I love them.

  9. You have some wonderful pieces. That ring from Winston Churchill's daughter to your mother is amazing. I wear very little jewelry except rings on my wedding band finger and earrings. I do love both gold and silver and most often my earrings are hoops. I don't even mind mixing gold and silver together. Since I wear so little it doesn't take much for travel, but a small soft packet. I may take one necklace too. How fun to be planning an adventure in May.
