On a bright Saturday in the Spring of 1963, best friend Paula and I hopped off a Trailways bus in Wilmington, North Carolina after an all night ride from Washington, D.C. At age 19 one can still hop after a cramped bus ride - remember those days! An English friend had invited us down for the weekend to her home in Carolina Beach.
Last Saturday, once again I strolled along the tiny section remaining of the once vivacious boardwalk. Unfortunately time has erased much of the fun. The kiddie rides, game arcades, restaurants and gift shops are mostly gone. The wooden boardwalk itself is just a short strip of the original along the beachfront, the rest removed to build up the dunes for better protection against hurricane and storm damage. Remaining are a few bars......one where we ate a supper of not so good seafood, but enjoyed the locals putting on a show in their wild Halloween costumes and having a jovial time.
Jasmin..........always ready for an ice cream cone!!
Never a shortage of sugar at the seaside!
Pink Oleander still blooming.
Plenty of empty seats around once the Summer crowds have left.
As you know, Paula and I are still traveling together..........but our destinations are much different and we've graduated from the Trailways bus to more comfortable modes of transportation. Speaking of which............well you'll just have to keep stopping by here to find out where we're headed next!
Happy Pink Saturday wherever you are spending it this weekend. Stop by How Sweet The Sound to see Beverly's lineup for this week.
Carolina Beach, North Carolina
