Do you shop at Aldi? I do quite often because besides great fresh produce,
often locally grown, I find fabulous food items from Europe, especially
now for the Christmas season-------and where else can you find a good
New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc for just $6.99?

Aldi is part of the Trader Joe group, but prices are much lower. Being somewhat
bare bones doesn't bother me - the staff are helpful and everything moves along
at a fast clip. No free bags, I take my own, and no credit cards, so I have
to remember to go with cash as I don't do debit. Kinda the old-fashioned way
of grocery shopping, and you leave the store with quite a lot for your money.
This past week you might have seen these large German made Choceur
brand chocolate Santas, 10" tall/7.5oz, and just $1.99 each.
I purchased several. They make a great decoration - and mine will be
tucked into some special Christmas stockings soon-------to save Santa
some work as he surely has enough to do!
I'm off to bake more almond cookies now - I bet many of you are
doing something similar in your holiday kitchen today. Enjoy!

Aldi is new to me. We only recently got Trader Joe's stores here, so hopefully Aldi might come to town at some point in the future. The chocolate Santa would be in my basket quick as a wink. They are very festive, Mary. Year before last I did our Christmas table with a chocolate Santa theme. Think I'll stop by TJ tomorrow to see if they have these. It might be the year to revisit a theme with a twist.
ReplyDeleteStop by when you get a chance. I shared my own post about the green reindeer and soon to post about the white. Hopefully tomorrow.
Merry Christmas!
Oooh, what low prices! I admit to enjoying some NZ sav blanc from time to time. At the moment it is on special at our local bottle shop. You can compare the prices. http://www.bws.com.au/winespecials.html It is half price at the moment.
ReplyDeleteMy aunt in Michigan shops at Aldi so I've been there. Had never heard of it before, but it's a good concept. And great that they don't offer the plastic bags like other stores. Take your own box or tote and load up your own stuff. I think more stores should go that route. Those Santas are lovely. Best wishes and happy holidays, Tammy
ReplyDeleteWe don't have Aldi's here - just Trader Joe, which is always packed beyond belief with shoppers - it might take five to seven minutes just to get down one aisle. Parking is abominable and almost non existent. Why they built it in such a tiny shopping mall is beyond me. We shopped at Aldi's in WV when we visited our son and his family in April, and loved it.
ReplyDeleteAldi & Lidl, both German (Aldi owns Trader Joe's, I think) are really hitting the other supermarkets in the UK with their 'no fuss' approach, good quality, low prices and some very clever advertising. I want to reach into my PC monitor and eat that chocolate Santa. And I'll mention the sauvignon blanc to Head Office - one of her favourites!
ReplyDeleteI love Aldi! I discovered it when I lived in Germany and I was so impressed by the selection and the prices.
ReplyDeleteNo Aldi here. It's always great to find a store with a good selection for low prices. We don't have Trader Joe's in Canada and on a recent visit to Portland, Oregon I was shocked at how expensive it was to shop there. The chocolate Santas look delectable! Enjoy your holiday preparations, Mary. Have a wonderful Christmas.
ReplyDeleteDear Mary,
ReplyDeletePopping over to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Your trip to Budapest in spring sounds so exciting. I am looking forward to see J&L again very much too!
Love,
Madelief x
What a delightful and tasty find! They remind me of vintage foil covered chocolate Santas a 'few' years ago. :) Pam
ReplyDeleteDear Mary, Have you shared your recipe for Almond Cookies in the past? Maybe I missed it. I would love to know your version.
ReplyDeleteI looked around to see if we have an Aldi in the next town, but no such luck. The nearest Trader Joe is 120 miles away. Will have to wait till we make a little gourmet run to the California coast.
Happy cooking and happy baking and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Wishing you and Bob a Wonderful Christmas.
ReplyDeleteYour decorations are lovely and so tastefully displayed and a very unusual tree. I love the old book spines so textured with the smooth shiny foil Father Christmas next to each other on the shelf.
Having a quiet christmas here with our daughter. I see you are staying home this year. How lovely to catch up with Paula, that is an amazing friendship you share over 50 years.
Hope you enjoy a fun filled Christmas time with your friends and family.
Best wishes for 2015. Eileenx
Have not heard of Aldi's, but we have Trader Joe's.
ReplyDeleteVery cute Santa chocolates.
