A little fanfare please - here in the southeast, spring now surrounds us.
I have to admit that yesterday the house and garden looked lovely
in the sunlight of late afternoon. I took these photos with my phone.
Bob had spent over three hot hours, mowing, trimming, blowing etc.
We walked about for a while but the pollen was
extremely heavy so no sitting outside. We checked the
shrubs, many now blooming, and perennials such as
peonies and hostas poking their way through the earth.
We felt good about how the garden looks this week.
I joked with Bob about perhaps we should put out a FOR SALE
sign with so much 'curb appeal' going on!
Our lawn is thick and green, the best I can recall in many years thanks
to over seeding heavily last autumn. For those of you interested in gardening
but living in other areas of the US, or overseas, we prefer to grow fescue grass
which remains green all winter into spring, dies back somewhat in hot, dry
summer weather if not watered, but then greens up again in autumn.
It does require weekly mowing in the spring and summer as it grows tall but
is lush and dark green.
Others prefer Bermuda grass which turns brown in winter but does well all
summer in the heat, staying green and quite short without much water.

are now coming into bloom.

ReplyDeleteThere is plenty going on in the gardens around me here, and orchards are at their most beautiful now. Unfortunately, we're having frosty nights and even lower temperatures forecast for the weekend. Just hoping not too much will freeze to death.

ReplyDeleteYou're so kind Vee. Right now it all looks quite good but is a lot of work. I worry about the coming years. Guess if we stay (and Bob refuses to consider a condo any time soon!) we may have to employ garden help.
DeleteYou garden is looking lovely. Our azaleas we planted last fall are small but blooming. My tulips are just starting to open.

It's amazing how lush and green your lawn and gardens are already. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised with you living in the southeast. It's just too bad that the pollen is so bad that you can't even sit outside.
ReplyDeleteThe only things going on here in IL is lilies and daffodils poking out of the ground (not even in bloom; just the green shoots), chives and mint showing up in my herb garden, and my lilac bush started to bud. The weather here is crazy right now...Mon and Tues were 70 degrees and sunny. We were in all our glory. We brought out the two chairs for our little front deck and enjoyed our coffee and lunch outside in the sun. Then yesterday was high of 35 with snow showers! From short sleeves to winter coats in 24 hours. Today is the same - 35 degrees, but with rain and high wind.
Mother Nature is so fickle - just seems to love playing weather tricks on us!

How lovely your garden looks, Mary. Grass here is green all winter and dries to brown in the summer heat - perhaps it's the same type. I love your white arch. Kudos to Bob for all the hard work.
ReplyDeleteYour garden is a beautiful, magical place. I don't seem to have the knack to plant things in a way that makes it look pleasing to the eye. Everything seems to be all over the place with no coherent plan.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Everything is in bloom here. The last hurrah before summer heat creeps in. This past week or so has gotten up into the 80s during the day so that definitely means it will be extra hot pretty soon. Have a good Friday!
