Front Porch company and pumpkin bread -

I've only purchased one new decorative item for Autumn this year -
this sign for the porch which says it all for me personally.

We were able to spend some fun 'porch time' on Saturday - first with
our former neighbor April, who recently moved, when she visited late
afternoon. Then, quite late into the evening, with our neighbor Bob from
the other side who joined us after his 4.5 mile run, then shared a good
bottle of Portuguese red and an impromptu supper of Italian baked
eggplant Parmigiana, followed by an English sherry trifle I made
 earlier in the day.

I love unplanned happenings such as that - lighting the candles as
darkness arrived, good conversation, a drink, and an easy meal.

Do you enjoy pumpkin bread. . . . . . an Autumn bake many of us concoct
from scratch or, much easier, a readymade mix?  For several years
I've turned to Libby's mix to which you add just fresh eggs, oil and water.
Libby's is known for their great canned pumpkin and this colorful box which
makes two delicious 9"X5" loaves - and includes their awesome can of
pumpkin - is the best. At $4.99 it's a great buy.

This year I stocked up early with several boxes as they disappear from the
grocery shelves fast. I found them at Target and also at LIDL.
I've already baked and shared a couple of loaves. They also freeze well so
you can enjoy pumpkin bread all winter. . . . .along with hot chocolate or
a cup of tea on a chilly day. . . . .I'm waiting for them!

Another week, hopefully a good one for all.

  1. Thanks for the tip about Libby's. I used to be a snob about such things. Now that I am older, I am much more relaxed about such things.

Your times on the porch sound marvelous. Is Bob Nala's dad?

    1. You're correct Vee - Bob is Nala cat's 'dad'!

  2. Your beautifully decorated porch looks like just the place to be for the fall season. It seems like we wait so long for it and now that it's here, it should be fully enjoyed. Casual visits with the neighbors sounds delightful. I am going to be on the lookout for that pumpkin bread mix. Sounds like a great thing to have on hand.

    1. Thanks Kim. I'm hoping the autumn weather settles soon - storms here again tomorrow, and we don't need more rain!
You will love that mix - and the loaves never stick to the pans, always a plus for me!

  3. Mary, Your porch is lovely and so inviting! Yes, I enjoy impromptu gatherings as well. Fall is my favorite season, and there is always a loaf or two of pumpkin bread on the counter. Enjoy the season! Hugs!

    1. If only we blogging friends could all meet and enjoy tea and pumpkin bread - that would be a special autumn treat!
      Hugs to you Bonnie.

  4. That pumpkin bread and your shared impromptu meal sound delicious. Did you have the meal on your porch?

    1. Yes we did eat on the porch - we live on a cul-de-sac so evenings are really quiet even on the street side of the house. We often eat in the screened gazebo in the back garden also.
I love dining out. . . . . but have not eaten in a restaurant or had a restaurant meal since mid-March, phew!!!!

  5. Porch time sounds lovely at your place. I like those spontaneous get togethers, too. Your menu sounded delicious. I've not seen a pumpkin bread mix here, but perhaps I just haven't looked. Your autumn sign says it all! If I lived with your summer heat and humidity, I'd feel the same! Here it's too cool for eating outdoors, although the sun is shining today and with a light coat or a sweater it would be pleasant on the patio. Enjoy these beautiful days!

    1. Lorrie dear, so glad you are also enjoying some Autumnal weather. It may be cooler but I know you have some sweaters to snuggle in - so go for it on the patio!

  6. It sounds like you live in a lovely neighbourhood, Mary. Unplanned happenings can often be the most fun.

I do like pumpkin bread. I made a vegan version from scratch a while ago which was quite yummy. As you probably know already, the closest thing Aussies get to canned pumpkin is canned pumpkin soup. We eat pumpkin as a staple veggie here so, if we need mashed/pureed pumpkin, we make it fresh as we usually always have pumpkin on hand all year round.

We are in our spring now but I can enjoy seeing your lovely fall decorating. I love the look of your pumpkins on the porch!

Side-note - Thanks so much for the caring comment on my blog re. my brother's ordeal at sea. I will post an update soon but just wanted to let you know that they have both been released from hospital now. They will still do blood tests and out-patient visits until they are fully in the clear but things are looking good.

    Have a lovely week.

    Hugs,
    Serena xo

    1. Serena we are so thrilled to hear the guys are doing so well - the story of their ordeal and the way they swam so far is one for the record books I'm sure. Hug them for me when you can!!!
Pure canned pumpkin is a useful pantry staple - very popular here. I'm always stunned though when at the pumpkin farm picking out the best edible/roasting versions to cook - people look at me like I'm odd actually planning to roast and eat them! I learnt how delicious they are when in southern France at my brother's home some years ago - attending the 'pumpkin festival' and then my SIL roasting them for tasty veggie dishes, soups etc.

  7. Dearest Mary,
Yes, those get togethers over a meal with good conversation make for fond memories!
We seldom use our front porch. We have patios all around our home and also a balcony... and a gazebo with table. I used to serve us breakfast there and carry the tray for coffee/tea breaks. Supper on the balcony, al fresco. Somehow, we don't manage it all in a day. Well, taking naps, of course also cuts out time... But we always have the memories!
If we would have company, sure we would do it again.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. We enjoy time in our gazebo too - especially as it's screened - is yours?) and the mosquitoes rarely make sitting out there a problem.

    2. Dearest Mary,
No we don't have anything screened. We have a fan and that helps better.
Our previous home came with a screened in porch but the first thing is converting this new build home into one with a double glassed porch/veranda. That way you never have all the sand blowing in, together with partly the rain too...
      Hugs,
      Mariette

    3. My gazebo has a fan too, it moves the air on really hot days - but I'm allergic to mosquitoes and am 'saved' by the screens. It's the only way I can spend time eating al fresco for most of the summertime, especially in the evenings!
As you can imagine - my favorite day is always when the first frost arrives, then at least the biting/stinging garden visitors become fewer!

  8. Your porch time with friends sounded wonderful - and so did your impromptu meal!

I just made a loaf of pumpkin bread today, but I'm a food purist, so no mixes for me. ;-) I found a recipe on Cookie & Kate that used pure maple syrup instead of sugar. I just ate a piece and now I don't want dinner!

Hope to see you again - Jasmin and I will definitely be back for some holiday shopping.

Have a good trip to SC - stay safe.

  10. We never see pumpkin bread, let alone a mix for it, around here. After reading the comments, I really want to try it. At least we have plenty of pumpkins! What fun to have the impromptu dinner on the porch, and I bet your trifle is the business. Love the sign, Autumn is my season too. xx

  11. I always enjoy the Autumn season too. Pumpkin bread is a thing I've never tried - or even heard of.

  12. I would have loved to join you on your beautiful porch, sharing the lovely meal (and the wine) after a run (or even without the run)!
Pumpkin bread sounds yummy, I don't think I have ever seen it over here.

  13. Dear Mary,
Impromptu visits turn out to be the best. And I know, in your household, that you are always ready to receive your guests in style.

  14. Everything looks so festive Mary, I want to stop in for coffee and try some of that bread! We have a family recipe which I am asked to make over and over. I will send you the recipe. It was in the National Heart Association Cookbook many years ago. Hope you are both well...from the looks of your porch you are, it says happiness all over. All the best from New Hampshire Mary. xx

  15. OK, now I need pumpkin bread. Jim usually makes it, but so far hasn't mentioned it. I have never seen that product from Libby's, but now I will watch for it. How lovely to have porch time!

  16. Fall is my season too and I also like Pumpkins but never heard of pumpkin bread. Lidl Europe doesn't sell it. Do you have a recipe ?

  17. I'm definitely waiting for chilly days. Anything except fresh pumpkin is hard to come by here. Not that it matters that much to me as I can't say I anything made with pumpkin except soup.
