SPRING is here!

"Spring drew on. . . . and a greenness grew over those brown beds, which, freshening daily, suggested the thought that Hope traversed them at night, and left each morning brighter traces of her steps."        ~ Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre ~

If 'Hope" traversed my garden last night she would have perhaps been scared away by 'ghosts!'  Such a very cold night was forecast, 28F.  Concern for plants and shrubs, even the leafing trees, was high. At dusk we went out and covered the hydrangeas in front of the porch, and the peonies which are already showing growth. I keep old shower curtain liners handy for this thankfully infrequent job, they seem to do well . . . . but do appear as ghostly white mounds in the night garden! I whipped them off this morning after the sun had warmed us up above freezing, and thankfully the sun is full and brilliant now and it will soon reach 53F.  One more night of freezing temps and then we'll be over the hump I think.

Tonight we'll light the last fire. Our hearth served us well as always over winter. Yesterday we started our clean out of the leaves remaining in the front garden beds - we'll be off to purchase mulch soon to freshen them and keep the weeds controlled. As I write the street sweeper truck has driven by - really good to see the cul-de-sac swept clean to welcome the first day of Spring. Wishing you a happy one.

  1. Dearest Mary,
We too had frost around 6:00 AM 30°F and I hate to see some of our Japanese magnolias having already had frost damage... The south is tricky with its 'seven' springs!
    Lovely bouquet and bunnies.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  3. It looks like spring there! Gosh, it has been cold for you folks in the southern tier. Hopefully, this is the last night of such cold temps. Happy spring!

  4. Happy Spring to you and Bob, dear Mary!
You could paint ghostly faces on the shower curtain liners and decorate your garden again for Halloween :-)
It is definitely spring here, cold nights or not. The magnolia trees in my street are ready to burst - I will take a picture when that happens, and show it on my blog as I have done in past years.

  5. Happy Spring, Mary! You've had a cold spell recently, and I hope it ends soon so your plants don't suffer. You take such good care of them. We've had a rainy couple of days which means slightly warmer nights and no danger of frost. It could still happen, but things are really starting to grow and everything feels spring-like.

  6. Vi har frostiga nätter här också. Våren är lite avvaktande än :) Men nu är det dags att vårstäda ute, klippa perenner och kratta löv, ja det finns ALLTID något att göra när man har trädgård!
    Varm kram från Titti

  7. That chickadee has a nice little birdseed house -- is it to feast on -- or actually a house to live in? Lovely photos. We are having especially nice weather -- a tad warm during the day, but still nice and cool at night. Rain expected next week which we welcome. We've had nice showers this year -- not the kind that cause flash flooding like we had last year. Happy Spring to you.

    1. Tammy it's a little house to gobble up! I think the opening is too small to make it a nest box - we shall see though!
