We were at the North Carolina coast for a couple of days.
The sea air, mixed with some very heavy rain the first day,
cleared the cobwebs and brought some time to relax, meet
up with old friends. . . . . .and make a few new ones.
New Bern, North Carolina’s second oldest town, was founded in
1710 by Swiss nobleman, Christoph von Graffenried, and named
after his native city of Berne, Switzerland. Bern means “bear” and the
“Bern Bear” symbol is seen on its flag. Throughout the city you will
see many creative Bear Town Bears.
New Bern is a riverfront city near the North Carolina coast.
The Tryon Palace complex includes a replica of the state's
1st capitol, historic homes, gardens and the North Carolina
History Center.
The Birthplace of Pepsi-Cola is the drugstore where the
drink was invented in the 1890s.
Love the town of New Bern, NC
This historic home is on the market but requires so much work.
Hopefully someone with deep pockets will adopt her, restore her,
and bring back her beauty of long ago.
Waiting for the storm to pass.
Morning brought sunshine. . . . . but the boats stayed put. Don't you
wonder why so many people buy boats but never seem to use them?
More on this lovely bookshop, and the owner, coming soon!
What a beautiful place.
ReplyDeleteThat historic home looks beautiful. I hope someone restores it.
ReplyDeleteDuring our travels this summer we have seen many historic houses that could do with a facelift. Those houses have such character!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good getaway to the sea. Sometimes, at home, we like to walk through marinas. So many boats never go anywhere. Very sad.
I I imagine that once the carved woodwork starts to rot on a historic home like that there'd be a real problem to replace it - if indeed you can still find craftsmen up to the job. I was once told that the larger the boat the less it gets used. Owners of cheap little dinghies are out on the water all the time while the big fancy yachts stay moored up for most of the year.
ReplyDeleteNew Bern looks like a pretty place for a little holiday break. Looking at the sea and boats is always restful, rain or shine. I love the old house, and just a coat of paint would work wonders. Hope you have had respite from the awful heat, which I am afraid is coming to us later this week. xox
ReplyDeleteI would love to have my veranda face the boats and piers. Mind you, I may not work as hard as sitting in a closed office.
ReplyDelete"Come in and meet your next favourite book" - who could resist that invitiation!
ReplyDeleteNew Bern looks nothing like the original Bern, but then New York has nothing in common with York, either.
I am glad you had such a good trip and relaxing time there!
That "lost place" does indeed need a lot of work. I wonder how strict regulations are about keeping historic features; it's a nightmare here in Germany when you want to renovate a listed building.
What a lovely little get-away.
