.......the large, fragrant, papery blossoms of
Ipomoea alba appeared this evening.
Ipomoea alba appeared this evening.
The knobbly seeds planted lightly in the pot in Spring, struggled through the desert-like conditions of early Summer. Then, with prodigious amounts of water, a handful of granular nourishment, and whispers each heavy, humid evening as the sun sank lower and the bats flew from the trees, it happened. Magical.............opening quickly, scattered like ladies delicate hankies tossed nonchalantly into the clambering vines. Illuminated perfectly when the camera flash went off..............the moonflowers in all their pristine beauty on the front porch.
Summer in the south is truly here at last.
So pretty!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! They are wonderful.

Mine are not yet blooming - could be the Texas heat. I'm having flower envy.

FYI - I viewed Maxie's nice blog and have informed her that her 'moonflowers' are not the vining ones like mine - she actually has Datura which is a different plant and highly toxic to humans, pets and wildlife. If you are growing Datura please go here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datura_meteloides - for more info. Or, visit Maxie's blog Prims and Annies - the link is above in her comment - you can see her Datura and the difference between her plant and my vine.

I have moon vines all along my garden fence.Pure magical in the moonlight . Smiles, Dottie
ReplyDeleteLovely! I so wanted to grow some, but my seeds chose not to make an appearance. I think maybe they needed nutrients and whispers such as your plants got. Lucky you! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI've read about moonflowers, but have never seen one in person. Yours look lovely. What a magical plant.
ReplyDeleteWell, I ordered and planted them here in the Pacific NW. Unfortunately I believe it is to cold here on the East side of state and they just have not done anything but get one inch tall. I'm not going to give up though and will try again next year. Hurray for yours blooming and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteSure wish technoligy included smell:)
ReplyDeleteReally, really lovely, Mary! I am so glad they bloomed for you. Mom had some in her yard several years. They are so beautiful in the moonlight!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love them? I gave a few plants that I had grown to our neighbors, and they were so excited when they bloomed.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
