As much fun as it is to travel to far away places, leaving home has it downside.
For me waving goodbye to the garden is always hard. Having to say au revoir,
when it's just starting to thrive in the warm springtime sunshine, brings a catch
to my throat and even a tear to my eye as the car backs down the driveway.
to my throat and even a tear to my eye as the car backs down the driveway.
Last weekend I picked parsley and scattered annual seeds. There will be no
languishing at the garden centers this Spring, sighing over all those gorgeous
pots of perennials just waiting for a garden spot.
So right now the garden IS lovely, things are growing rapidly with April showers
and warm sunshine. Although the azaleas are late this year they have bloomed and
I've enjoyed them this past week before leaving. Above you can see the first fig
leaves appearing - by the time I return perhaps there will be tiny fruits.
The grass was mowed - hopefully it grows slowly. The neighbors will watch the
cottage and hopefully the weather will be gentle whilst we're away, with just quiet
breezes to blow the last of the pollen off the roof.
I know it will look like a jungle when we return mid-May!
What do you miss most when leaving home for an extended trip?
Safe travels Mary - I miss my home and my garden too, but love returning to see it all again.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the home and garden are there when you get back, it is easy to leave for a while . :) Bon Voyage !!
ReplyDeleteDear Mary, No wonder you don't like to leave your garden at this time of the year. It all looks so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOur tickets for Europe are purchased but we won't be leaving until the first of October. I need to be here so that I can enjoy my garden and I like to harvest all of the vegetables before the first frost.
Have a great trip and take lots of pictures for us to admire when you get back.
Have a great trip. You home and garden look beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI thought of you this morning as I threw a load of sheets into the laundry and started my day. I hope you have a wonderful time away. Do you find that you have a tiny pang of regret as you drive away from your home, but then rarely think about it on your trip? I do. I miss my garden and home, but once I'm in the air or the car or the boat, I'm all there and home recedes. Then, on the last day or two of the journey, my mind wings homeward once again and I begin to think about the plants and the flowers and the things I want to do there. Our minds are funny things, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteSafe and happy travels.
My animals.
ReplyDeleteYour garden is beautiful, Mary!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about leaving the garden. The lawn looks like a very nasty meadow when you get back! x
ReplyDeleteMary, Your gardens are lovely. Oh my...the older I get, I miss just being home. I love traveling, but I always love coming home. Have a wonderful time. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteOh Mary
ReplyDeleteI feel just the same about leaving my garden!
It will be easier for me, as already I'm putting my garden to bed for the approaching winter months.
There will be many more Springs for you to stay at home and enjoy the beauty of this exciting season!
We must travel while we can - seeing the world feeds my soul - like music, books and art.
I always miss our comfortable bed!
Thinking of you and Bob - wishing you both happy times!
Much love and
God Bless
Shane x
Dear Mary, what a stunning garden and your cottage is idyllic. I can see why you would have trouble dragging yourself away! I like your new header too, very lovely. Have a great trip and look forward to travelling along with you.
ReplyDeleteYou've cared so well for your gardens and birds that they will be fine and look wonderful when you return. But, I do understand how you will miss them. I hope you have a fabulous holiday. We will all miss your posts. Hugs, Deb
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame to leave when green shoots are finally apperaing, I try not to be away when the potager is at it's peak. Of course I miss M'selle Fleur the most when travelling..
ReplyDeleteHope you have arrived safely in Budapest, looking forward to hearing about the cruise as it's something we've considered doing, also thinking about a cruise on the Douro in Portugal.
Your garden looks beautiful Mary and it will look just as beautiful when you get back. Wishing you a lovely time on your travels and please send Jane and Lance my love and give them a big hug!
ReplyDeleteHave fun!

Happy Travels! Your home and gardens are just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI do miss my gardens and my little D when gone. Oh I see you
are seeing Jane and Lance. I don't visit their blog often, but I am
aware of who they are. Enjoy!
usually my bed!!....lol....Can't wait to see your photos
ReplyDeleteYour garden and yard looks so pretty and your cottage is beautiful. I'm sure you will notice some growth and changes when you return but you will still have the best of the summer season to enjoy it all. I usually miss my flowers and garden when I'm away in the summer but there is nothing to miss in our winters. :) Have a wonderful and safe trip! Blessings and hugs. Pam
ReplyDeleteYour house and gardens are just so beautiful! I can't believe how much everything is in bloom. You are waaay far ahead of us here in IL. We've barely begun here! The trees are just now getting little green leaves on the and the only flowers poking out of the ground are daffodils and tulips. I always get very anxious about leaving my house, too when we go on a trip (which we haven't been on in 5-1/2 years!), but I find that once I get to my destination, I relax and all is well. I'm sure the same will be for you and that your neighbor's will take good care of your home.
ReplyDeleteI don't miss anything when I go on an extended trip. I live in Silicon Valley and it is not a friendly place, nor do I really care for this area of California. Before I moved to CA I lived in Pfafftown, NC (practically part of Winston-Salem) and I loved it there. Like you, when I lived there I always missed my yard, especially when my azaleas and rhododendruns were in full bloom.
