It was a day I had dreamed about. . . . . . . . for many, many years.
A visit to Giverny.
Monsieur Claude Monet's house and garden.
An early September morning.
Cool, sunny, and just about perfect.
A piece of paradise on earth.
Claude Monet's impressionist style paintings transferred to silky fabric umbrellas -
displayed outside the garden shop at his home at Giverny, France. . . . . . .
. . . . . . . and I've kicked myself ever since for not buying one!
I have an appointment this morning and it's raining quite hard so an umbrella
may be required. . . . . . . and the garden will be happy.

Photographed by me on that special day, PicMonkey assisted b/w sketch, then
colored by hand with watercolor and regular English-made Derwent pencils.
If interested, here's the link back to my blog post for that special day in 2015 - the
garden was truly spectacular.
Hope you stop here at Scribble Picnic to see today's

We'd love for you to join in too!
Your drawing makes me wish that I could see these umbrellas for real, it is just delightful. The technique you are using is really interesting and gives such a soft quality to it. Your colours have definately caught the Monet look and feel. Really well done Mary.
ReplyDeletethose umbrellas looks great like some portable art. the image looks a bit dark on my screen but I like the colors, like a monet painting.
ReplyDeletehave a lovely day.
The process you took for editing the photo is very interesting! I am going back to see the garden...(I may find that I was already there...the joys of a memory like a sieve.)
ReplyDeleteSo soft and pretty!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! I want this umbrella. This should be matted and framed!! Wonderful image.
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteI love how you do this on the computer. And your colouring and shading is wonderful. I took a little trip to your back post and those gardens are amazing. I could see one Monet painting as I looked at them. I love the gentle aspect of Monet - peaceful, gentle, colourful. Well done.
Lovely photograph painting.
ReplyDeleteI think you captured the spirit of your time there.
This is beautiful! I love how you coloured it in...soft and pastel-like. Yes, you definitely captured the Monet style here.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful interpretation, so beautiful!
ReplyDeletePerfect colors for this -- I can just feel that crisp September air! Beautiful! So loved seeing you and Grandpa this afternoon, we had so much fun! Love you both xx
ReplyDeleteand that, dear Mary, is a very sweet message from Cassie. how lucky she is to know here grandparents. I didn't but then both my grandmothers were horrid pretty much and the grandfather, aloof, so just as well, I suppose. hahaha.
DeleteI try not to be horrid, haha!!!! Far from perfect but trying my best.
DeleteMichael, you are so funny -
Hugs - Mary
Now I wish to be off to Giverny for an umbrella too. Dreaming with you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun image you created! I clicked back to your post from Giverny and relived our trip there last summer, as well. To walk through Monet's gardens and see the sights he painted was a dream come true for me. It was magical. And his house! The lovely view from the upper windows and the colour in the downstairs rooms - so unique and beautiful. Thanks for this post, Mary!
ReplyDeleteI recall how you loved the gardens and house too Lorrie - we are blessed to have been able to enjoy it all. Only thing better would have been doing it together! There's always Butchart Gardens though - perhaps we'll meet up there one of these days!
DeleteMary x
I really agree with Linda's words above about your technique being very interesting. It's almost like you are creating a whole new genre of art! I love how you take your photos, manipulate them then print them out to colour with pencil. I love your coloured pencil work here too. It's very expresssive, Very apropos for Monet! Fabulous picture illo, Mary! I am utterly thrilled to have you on borad with thhese weekly picnics, so you know, look ahead and upcoming themes so you can be sure to have something worthy to start with. Now, capturing a fairy (due in two weeks) might be a lil hard but keep traveling and who knows. Maybe another trip to Ireland will be in order. You can use this picnic as a jolly good excuse.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for playing along. Love it!
You are more than kind to say all this Michael - and for me, I love that I'm accepted by real artists posting on your fun weekly 'picnic'. At first I thought they might think I was cheating as I'm not actually drawing, but they, like you, are being so generous with their comments on this little technique I've come up with. Such lovely people (thanks to you all). But then creative folk always are - I should know having working in art/advertising for many years when younger.
DeleteAs for Fairies. . . . . . . you know I have them in my secret garden! It's going to be hard photographing them though - and someone told me they don't show up on film, so I'll be out there will my digital camera and you just never know what I might spy!
Mary -
Just went back to read this. Big smiles here. Ahhh...your fabulous English garden! Love it.
DeleteThose umbrellas must have made beautiful canvasses for that wonderful art. I can see why the regret for not purchasing one. But you've really captured a wonderful feeling for nature and art here.
ReplyDeleteDear Mary, you are already on your way to becoming a fine artist. I see how you are blending your colors and using color on top of color. Looking forward to your next masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteYou are much too kind dear Gina - but I am having fun with Michael's weekly theme! It's making me do something creative and different.
DeleteThank you - Mary x
This is fantastic, Mary. I love your editing style. This really brings the lovely row of umbrellas to life. Magical! It's so wonderful to see you joining Scribble Picnic each week and I know it means a lot to Michael that you and others are doing this as well. I'm so proud of him starting a new art co-op and pushing through. He's too good to just "quit". :)
ReplyDeleteLove to you! x
Thanks again Alexandra - how can anyone not enjoy these fun things your delightful hubby comes up with!!!
DeleteLove you two - you are both SO creative.
Mary xx
