Yesterday celebrating July 4, 2021
OK, many of you know him personally and will
agree that my Bob is a very special guy!
Today is his 81st birthday!
You might never know it because he is quite
fabulous in so many ways for a man of this age.
I could ramble on and tell you so much
about him, all good, all amazing, all positive.
But, as we have other things to do today
to celebrate, I'll just share this little ditty
because It's the kind of thing Bob loves to read,
and even though it's British, much of it will also
bring back similar memories of growing up in
America..........and it will bring that great smile,
which Bob is known for, to his dear face.
BACK IN THE DAYS
Back in the days of tanners and bobs,When Mothers had patience and Fathers had jobs. When football team families wore hand me down shoes,And TV gave only two channels to choose. When snowballs were harmless; ice slides were permitted,And all of your jumpers were warm and hand knitted.Back in the days of hot ginger beers,When children remained so for more than six years. When children respected what older folks said,And pot was a thing you kept under your bed.Back in the days of Listen with Mother,When neighbours were friendly and talked to each other. When cars were so rare you could play in the street. When Doctors made house calls; Police walked the beat.Back in the days of Milligan's Goons,When butter was butter and songs all had tunes. It was dumplings for dinner and trifle for tea,And your annual break was a day by the sea.Back in the days of Dixon's Dock Green,Crackerjack pens and Lyons ice cream. When children could freely wear National Health glasses,And teachers all stood at the FRONT of their classesBack in the days of rocking and reeling,When mobiles were things that you hung from the ceiling. When woodwork and pottery got taught in schools,And everyone dreamed of a win on the pools.Back in the days when I was a lad,I can't help but smile for the fun that I had.Hopscotch and roller skates; snowballs to lob.Back in the days of tanners and bobs.

Happy Birthday Bob! Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteBob says many thanks for thinking of him Penny.
DeleteMany happy returns, Bob!
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara - Bob appreciates your birthday greeting.
DeleteThat was a great ditty, though I was prepared for the worst. Ha! Happy Birthday to your Bob and many more to come!
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it Vee - some names Americans wouldn't know - but you get the gist!
DeleteOh for those good old days to return!
Bob says thanks.......he certainly doesn't feel 81, well at least most of the time!
Mary -
Enjoyed that little rhyme as I'm pretty much of that British generation. I particularly smiled at the ice slides; at my primary school the headmaster would throw down a bucket of water so that it had time to freeze by the time we arrived for school. What would health and safety have to say about that?
ReplyDeleteI knew you would recall much of those days John - they were the best!
DeleteHappy Birthday to your Special Guy Bob - he doesn't look a single day older than we saw him back in May 2019. However, does he really know about Dixon of Dock Green, Milligan's Goons, Crackerjack pens, and Lyons ice-cream?
ReplyDeleteNo, not all those things of the past we enjoyed in the UK, but he did have similar here which brought back those memories from the good old days!
DeleteBob thanks you for the kind birthday wishes - he's a bit thinner than in 2019, but still looks much younger than 81, lucky guy!
Mary -
Many happy returns Bob - I am 88and all the things you mention in your poem are so familiar. Enjoy whatever Mary has planned.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pat - Bob and I think you are amazing for your age - you write such great posts always.

Dixon of Dock Green 'Evening All' - I loved that!! what a great reminder: your Bob looks very young - what's his secret? Happy birthday Bob. How lovely that you have made this tribute for him. Betty x
ReplyDeleteBob's secret Betty is that he has his mother's genes! She lived to 96, and hardly a wrinkle, haha!
DeleteHe thanks you for the greeting.
Mary -
Dearest Mary,

May he celebrate many more to come and in good health together with you.
LOVE that old BACK IN THE DAYS story!
Most of it I can envision too.
Hug,
Mariette
Mariette, Bob thanks you so much - he enjoyed his quiet birthday and we are planning for many more together, blowing out candles and singing that always cheery Happy Birthday song - hopefully!
DeleteMary -
Singing and being positive sure helps 🤗!
DeleteHappy Birthday Bob! That's a great ditty, Mary :) x
ReplyDeleteThanks Pip - so much is true in that ditty, outdated perhaps but for we who grew up in England, many great memories.
