It was not a good week, the one just gone.
No glaring details, already far too much negativity hanging
over us all in regard to the state of the world and its future.
No in depth details about Bob, other than he experienced a health scare
last Sunday, I drove him to the ER, he was admitted overnight for tests
all of which turned out well thankfully. He's wearing a heart monitor for
a couple of weeks until his follow-up visit to a cardiologist.
Because of the above, we are walking more each day - although it's
somewhat difficult with my back issue. If you drive by you might spot me
hanging onto Bob's arm for a little extra support on the slopes as we
wander our neighborhood streets, haha!
Our weekly grocery shop on Thursday took an extra hour just to read
the sodium count on every item we took off the shelf. Most were scary!
Per the cardiologist Bob is now on the DASH eating plan, and I've
joined him. Salt is a huge no-no! Getting used to the loss of a familiar
flavor and food enhancer is workable. Herbs, spices, apple cider
vinegar will be of help.
Fortunately we are already on a plant-based diet, and have been for
years (I've eaten no meat or poultry for 45 years, Bob eats meat very rarely).
I cook from scratch daily and since COVID arrived we've only eaten
a few times away from home.
We feel we can do this. . . . . . . with perseverance.
I am sorry to hear about Bob's health scare! We all need to walk more and eat less salt for sure. Sending hugs.

So sorry to hear that, Mary. Hoping all will be well.
ReplyDeleteI hope that everything turns out OK. I'm sure you'll get used to the change of diet. I haven't added salt to anything for years - after a short time things start to have more flavour without having salt added.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about Bob's health scare. I know you two eat mostly healthy, as do Brian and I. I am not a vegetarian - I'm a flexitarian (combining some meatless meals with meat ones). We concentrate more on eating whole foods and organic whenever we can. We don't eat fast food or junk food; as little processed/packaged foods as possible, no fillers, chemicals, bad oils. I read labels on everything I buy. We restrict our sodium, too. And sugar. Sugar is a huge culprit for causing inflammation in the body.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you and Bob are out walking, even though you have the back pain. Who knows, maybe moving more might help with your pain? Trying to look on the bright side. ;-)

Dearest Mary,
ReplyDeleteSure you both can dot that too.
We've on that road for years already and it is possible.
Not easy as you already found out, checking the sodium content is time consuming, till you know exactly what not to get.
Good luck and yes, walking in the fresh air is very good.
We both biked this afternoon, in shorts and sandals.
Hugs,
Mariette
That would have been scary for you both. Keeping you and Bob in my thoughts and prayers, Mary. I need to use less salt in my diet too. I love to walk but, like you, I have a bad back and hip so it can be difficult and even flare up the pain level. Worth it though. :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the week ahead. xx
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteIf any two people can manage this medical bump in the road, it’s you and your husband! This I believe. Continue letting us know how both of you are doing … we care.
Helen
Dear Mary,
ReplyDeleteI feel with you and hope the heart condition of Bob is getting better soon!
Cooking most of my meals myself I can watch the salt content (though I know that bread and many things one does not suspect contain lots of salt); and am, as Melanie above called it, a flexitarian.
To reduce salt would be a real trial for me, as my blood-pressure is low.
Walks are always a good decision - a friend of mine has a knee/hip problem and favours Nordic walking sticks - they enable her to keep balance. Did you try that?
I wish both of you stamina and all the best!
I find the difference you make "no meat or poultry" interesting; poultry is also meat, is it not? Anyway, you have already been looking after yourselves very well, cooking and baking your own things and not eating convenient junk and highly processed food. I am sure you will put delicious meals on the table even without salt.
ReplyDeleteThe way you and Bob support each other - literally, when it comes to walking! - is wonderful. May you keep going for many, many more years!
We were both really sorry to learn of Bob's health scare and do hope that everything bodes well for him. The Pandemic has done untold harm to all of us in so many different ways especially as our days are spent so differently from how they were before. We have to keep pushing ourselves to do things which were no effort before. We went to Oxford for the day last Saturday and met up with our son and his wife. It was a bit chilly and I said "do we really want to leave our warm home and go" but in the end we were very pleased that we made the effort and went.
ReplyDeleteDear Mary, I an so very sorry to hear that Bob had a very scary day recently. It is good to hear that Bob will be wearing a heart monitor. The monitor will tell what might be wrong. I wore one for a month and ended up getting a pacemaker. It made a big differnce. I was hoping that your back was better after your treatments. Thinking of you both and wishing you good health.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Yes, you can do it. Hope it was just a momentary wake up call and Bob is doing OK going forward with marches around the neighborhood and less salt.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to learn of Bob's health scare. I hope the monitor reveals nothing serious. You two look after each other so well, and your cooking always looks delicious. Wishing you and Bob both good health and happy days.
ReplyDeleteOh Mary …. sorry to hear of Bobs health issues and wish him well. I’m trying to cut down on the salt ….. it’s hard as I do love salt on my food I’m afraid ! Good to hear that you are both getting out and about even though you have to hold onto each other 😂 XXXX
ReplyDeleteSending good wishes for Bob!
