February Rain and Garden Birds -

The rain pelted down most of yesterday.  The birds came nonstop to feed and then find sheltering places to dry off - on the front porch, under the eaves of the potting shed etc.

There were a lot of Eastern bluebirds whom we haven't seen during the winter but always welcome back. Others were the usual suspects including Blue jays, Carolina wrens, Cardinals, finches, sparrows and of course the woodpeckers.

Songbirds have always been the most pleasant addition to my garden. It looks like the feeders are going to need refilling often with so many who will soon be searching for nesting sites.
Today the sun is back and it's warming up. I need to get outside soon with rake and pruners and start some pre-springtime prep around the garden. I have to admit it gets harder each year.  We are now past adding much new in the way of shrubs and plants, but determination, effort, and a little hard work to at least keep things neat and tidy will pay off and bring a sense of satisfaction.

  1. My mother-in-law (who will be 89 next month) has long stopped any serious gardening job, she just can't do things such as clipping the hedge or trimming shrubs anymore. She has a good handyman locally who will come and do such jobs for her, and I am glad she does not need to worry about finding the money for such services that make life much easier for her.
Your avian visitors are always a delight even to us via your blog - how much nicer must it be for you in real life!

  2. Dearest Mary,
We too have so many birds! A good year ago when we had the huge oak tree cut down, it was quiet for a long time but now they're all back.
Guess our many feeders are being called out as their favorite restaurants!
Pieter has had to repair one feeder as the bottom has come off a few times from the weight of woodpeckers and squirrels. You cannot keep them out...
Enjoy them and yes, it soon will warm up. Today was lovely after days of wind and rain—so we biked 22 miles and in shorts at 70°C. Felt great, except in the shade it was chilly, also due to our speed.
The world looks so different when the sun is out!
I noticed from your photos that even the birds look 'sad' especially the Blue Bird!
Hugs and Happy Saint Valentine's Day to you both.

  3. Poor little Mr. Bluebird is having a bad feather day. Do pace yourself doing your pruning and clean-up. Everything can be accomplished a bit at a time. My wrist is just now recuperating from last spring's pruning efforts.

  4. Your bird pictures are always, always wonderful. I stood at my window earlier today and just enjoyed watching them fly back and forth before me.

  5. So many lovely birds visit your feeders, Mary. They know they will find food and a welcome there. We have a feeder and enjoy seeing the various species come and feed. No colourful bluebirds, though. They are beautiful.
Time to begin the garden cleanup here, too, a little bit at a time.
