Hand me a paint brush please!

Dining Room - Office

I really need to do something to freshen up this room which is used daily now as my 'office'. Looking around though there's not much to change, and what is here still brings me good feelings. Over the years I've painted the walls - several times - added wallpaper below the chair rail, painted dining chairs, a sideboard. . . . . .and the Welsh dresser at least twice! That piece is so useful with its shelves, drawers and a lower 'pot rack' however it will be getting a facelift soon - when the weather cools a bit and I have more energy.

Needless to say, there will be a lot of items to move prior to painting!
At that time all will be washed and there may even be some changes in the way they are displayed when returned to the shelves. Soon a few seasonal Autumn items will be added - this year I think we're all excited about gathering pumpkins - hoping the farms will have plenty for sale.

I noticed this dresser, with its awesome display, in an older Country Home magazine article. Immediately knew I wanted to paint the interior back of mine in a similar shade of grey to change it up a bit. . . . . .and have something different to look at as I spend so much time in this room now!

We stopped at the hardware store yesterday for a/c filters, and of course
 I looked at paint samples. . . . . . . and bought a quart can.

Magnolia Home has some really gorgeous colors and, although I've
never used their paint, when I saw Garden Trowel I had a feeling that
was the color for the dresser.

 Garden Trowel

"Working in the garden, putting your hands in the dirt, is something everyone should try at some point. It's a pure, back-to-the-basics experience. When you're in the garden, your trowel is an essential tool."   ~ Joanna Gaines

Once working in the garden slows down in the coming weeks,
and my garden trowel is tucked away in the potting shed,
I will pick up a paint brush and get to work indoors.

This will be my September project, and hopefully will be just the start
of more later.

    1. No longer up for large painting jobs Vee but something such as this should be simple - I can't crawl on my knobbly knees or spend time on ladders any longer!

  3. Dear Mary - I know a lot of people seem to have given up on the various shades of grey but I still really love them, especially that Garden Trowel shade that you have chosen. I always feel that you can dress grey up in so many different ways i.e adding cheery yellow for example. I wish that I had your energy it is taking me all of my time just to keep the house looking reasonably clean and smart.

    1. Dear, I really don't have much energy - and yes, ordinary housework has become boring and is often put off these days - but a small project like this will at least make me clear off the shelves, wash everything, and have something different to look at!

  5. I came upon your blog when you were painting your dresser years ago. You had a few interesting posts pertaining to that. I made comments several times and finally you came to my blog, read some daffy post I had written, and began your comment with, "Dear Jane." You had me right there! 😘 I think it was serendipity!

It's a perfect time to make changes in our homes-I'm in the middle of a few as well. Keep us posted.

    ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    1. . . . . . and I believe you asked me for tips on painting your coffee table, haha! That's how we met such a long time ago. Now we've spent time together in person over the years - and hopefully we'll do it again when life changes back to some kind of normal.
Hang in there dear Jane - sending hugs to you and A.

  6. The dresser and in fact all the room looks so gorgeous, I would not change one bit about it. But I know you love doing things around your house and garden, with your creative mind constantly bringing up fresh ideas. It will look great, no doubt.

    1. Meike thank you. I know you are a minimalist and your decor is nothing like mine - and I wish I could be like you, especially at this time. I have far too much stuff and am gradually trying to downsize. Worked on the winter wardrobe this weekend - fewer clothes needed now!!!!

  7. Thank you for sharing this wonderful post keep your awesome work
I have many hobbies. I love to travel and read. But my favorite hobby is cooking. Let me tell you why! First, I'll tell you a little bit about why I started cooking. Secondly, I'll give you some information about what I like to cook. Third, I will say how I use the Fooddy Blog for cooking.

When I started cooking, I was 10 years old. My mom wants me to be a chef. She has always believed that girls have to make different types of food, because one day they will get married. In my country, it is normal for girls not to cook. I feel lucky because I can cook many dishes. Now that I cook some of the dishes my children and husband love, I become happy and proud of my mother and myself. foody

    1. I enjoyed your cooking story - and I think both girls and boys should learn to cook at young age as it's a skill they will always need! Plus, it's such an enjoyable thing to do.

  8. This pandemic is a great time to be working on projects - if we can muster the "gumption". Mine will be re-doing my living room. Not with paint, but with furniture. We FINALLY found a sofa last week at Crate and Barrel, but it won't be delivered until early October. From there, I need to find a new chair or two, a coffee table, a floor lamp, and some kind of long but not tall bookcase for the wall by the fireplace, that we could put a TV on top of if we choose to.

    Have a beautiful weekend!

    1. So glad you found the sofa, love Crate & Barrel - and of course one new piece often means other pieces to work with it! Should keep you busy and be fun.

  10. Oh, I do love to see your decorating Mary. I have not painted in years, my knees are too stiff! Garden trowel is a great name for a very smart colour, and I can't wait to see the results. Happy painting xx

    1. My knees are that way too Patricia, plus the torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder - BUT I can do small jobs a bit at a time - but no rolling paint on walls any longer sadly!

  11. Oh Mary .... I’m in love with your dresser ! I love the colour that it is but it’s going to be brilliant with its new colour .... a change is always good. We have an original Victorian built in dresser in our breakfast room which is scrubbed pine but I am a bit reluctant to paint it. Everything else is painted so I think the light wood adds a bit of warmth. Looking forward to seeing your freshly painted dresser. ( love all of your china too ) XXXX

  12. I recall my brother's house in Muswell Hill (he lives in France now) with the built-in scrubbed pine kitchen dresser (Edwardian I believe) which was awesome. I bet yours is similar and I definitely wouldn't paint it Jackie.
I need to edit all that antique china - as well as everything else taking up space - just in case we move in the coming years. I really have too much 'stuff'!!!!!

  13. "Too much stuff" is a thought that has been running through my head for most of 2020, it is so hard to let go of "stuff" that we have loved and lived with for many years.
I like your choice of paint "Garden Trowel" is a fine name, looking forward to seeing the dresser with it's new coat of paint, I can imagine that it will provide a wonderful setting for your beautiful objets.
