Rose Mallow - a potted surprise started blooming this week.
Each showy rose mallow blossom lasts only a single day. If you cut stems back
by one-third, they bloom until early fall and keep the plant blooming until
it goes dormant in winter.
"Rose mallow is a plant that goes by several names -- swamp mallow,
crimson-eyed mallow or perennial hibiscus. The funnel-shaped blooms
of the 6-to-10-foot shrub are often rose pink or white with a red center,
and it thrives in moist, even wet, soil.
Rose mallow is perennial in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant
hardiness zones 5 through 10. No matter what you choose to call it,
annual pruning keeps it healthy and attractive."
This one first grew last summer - a bird must have
dropped a seed.

Mallows are beautiful flowers. I remember how some of the picturesque villages on the island of Bornholm were full of them, growing as tall as the low roofs of the old houses.
ReplyDeleteI just looked up Bornholm island, Denmark, and realized we sailed right by there when on the Queen Victoria Baltic cruise (a huge favorite trip). It looks like one of those wonderful places to live, like Oland in Sweden, where the summer months are especially perfect - but of course winter must be somewhat cold and blustery.
DeleteI would love to go back there - love the entire Baltic and it's where I first visited Germany as one of the ports was Warnemunde and we took a train to Rostock - lovely on a Sunday afternoon where there was a huge family style picnic in the park!

DeleteGood morning mary! I am not familiar with this glower but it is beautiful! Your weekend sounds nice, I think you should also find time to sit and relax by friend, enjoy the slowly changing seasons as we transition from one to another. A little hard to do when the stores are already selling christmas stuff. I hate to admit but I already have a ton of Fall stuff on my calendar and I am so excited for cooler weather. Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteI've not visited a fun store (other than the grocery really) in so long - bet there are a lot of seasonal decor things I'd swoon over, however will be making do with what I already have this year! Soon will be time to pull out the faux pumpkins, however will also try to get into country next month to head to our farm friends for fresh pumpkins too.

Definitely a bit cooler but no sunshine which is a bit dreary when looking out.

ReplyDeleteAll that rain you had was good for something. Wish we would get a little rain. No rain for 4 months. The land is drying up. Thank goodness for my pond. It still flows at 39 gallons per minute.

ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful! We had great bushes of rose mallow at church when I was a regular gardener there, and I never learned to prune them in such a way that they kept looking good after the initial gorgeous show. I also could never remember their name!

ReplyDeleteWe have 4 hibiscus plants in our garden, all in pots. I just love their vibrant colours. Good to know you can prune them back to keep them flowering.
