Hanging out to dry. . . .it's Spring!

We were fortunate - Thursday afternoon/evening storms passed our immediate
area with very little havoc. Sadly, not far off though, many towns and communities
had severe damage from tornadoes touching down, terrific winds causing
falling trees and roof damage etc.

Our bluebirds sheltered on the front porch looking quite straggly coming in from
the rain. . . . . . .

. . . . . . . but once dry and fluffed up again they were back in the fig tree
and eating at the feeders. Note tiny green buds just starting on the fig.

We welcomed a very chilly Friday morning with the unfurling of a bright
Spring flag.  Today, Saturday, finally it's here, the Spring Equinox.
We are starting a deck repair job so hoping for some warmer, drier
 weather over the weekend.

Enjoy your weekend.

  1. Dear Mary, I am glad to know there was no damage to your place. So good for the birds to have the opportunity to get dry and find shelter on your porch, and then have a good meal as well!
It's still very cold here, but the sun is out (sort of). There were several mini blizzards this week, and it is only forecast to warm up by Wednesday next week.

    1. Wow, mini blizzards! We were warned of the possibility of one here for Thurs. but thankfully it didn't materialize! In fact we were so lucky that the tornadoes didn't arrive - we still have so many trees close to the house!

  2. Dearest Mary,
Our bird baths are also very often used early in spring.
Maybe that's how they wash off all the pollen?
Gardens start looking beautiful very fast right now.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. The change around the neighborhood is amazing - especially the blossom trees.
      Happy cycling under the blossoms!

  3. Glad to hear that the storm was not too bad in your neck of the woods. Those poor birdies look a bit waterlogged. I often wonder how those little bodies withstand such miserable weather.
That little bit of green on your fig is such a hopeful sign. At only 35 degrees here this morning, it seems that spring is dragging it's feet this year. Although I will not complain as I am in no hurry for the summer heat and humidity.
Good luck getting your deck repair completed.
    Happy Spring!

    1. Warming up somewhat Kim during the day but the nights are still chilly! Things do seem much later this year - I'm wondering if the azaleas will bloom for Easter - not doing much yet!
Decking going well - found the guy in Nextdoor and took a leap of faith as one has to for anything these days - he's great so far.

  5. Dear MARY,
I'm so happy to hear that you were not affected too much by the storm. I know it's not the same but I am so delighted to see my greenhouse fig tree throwing out green leaves and another major branch.

  6. So good to know that the storm passed you by. That poor bluebird looks perfectly miserable or maybe just ticked off. Happy spring! May it be a beautiful one. 🌷

  7. Happy Spring Mary.
I have been to the States many times and adore your colourful birds. I have a tiny cardinal hanging on a hook in my kitchen but could never find a blue bird - so I really enjoyed seeing your pictures - delightful.

    1. Happy to share plenty of bird pix here Pat - we have so many in the garden from teeny tiny chickadees to large owls and hawks - thankfully the last two don't come to the feeders!

  8. What a lovely flag - we could do with some of those in a few of the village near where I live, where - to my extreme sadness - they were not welcoming of outsiders at all this last year. Unless of course they were bringing us our food, or medicines or sorting the infrastructure ... in fact putting in all the shifts and showing all the courage which allowed those of us lucky enough to live in rural areas to stay relatively safe and virus free. Sorry rant over, but I seldom have I been more embarrassed by my fellow neighbours than at some points last year when the resentment to visitors was palpable and so wrongly directed. So yes WELCOME - we could do with more of that

    1. House flags are popular here Mark - my personal collection is quite large and covers just about every season, holiday, special occasion - and yes, even a Union Jack!
As you can see the pole has warped, again, so I need to shop for a replacement! Sorry WELCOME mats (or signs) were not put out for those wonderful people who came to help your villages - this is what the world now needs so badly, more kindness and understanding.

  9. Happy spring, Mary! It was actually in the high 50's here today and will be in the low 60's tomorrow...both with plenty of sunshine. I am loving it! However, the rest of the week looks like rain every single day. Not THAT does not make me happy. ;-) I guess I should just be glad it's not snow! It's still very possible here. March is an all-over-the-place kind of month in IL.

  10. Happy Spring, Mary! Your magnolia is already putting on a good show! So glad your close shave with the Weather only extended to ruffling some feathers.

  11. Oh, your Spring flag is so happy and pretty Mary. Dear little wet bluebird, it looks cold too, but once dry all is well. We are having drenching rain, which is rare, and there will be some wet birds here in the morning :) xo

  12. Lucky that the birds were able to find some shelter on your porch; rain can be a worse killer than cold for small birds. Thanks for your concern but I'm fine: just very little to blog about here at present as we are asked to stay in our local area. Going to have my first jab was about as exciting as it got!

  14. Such cute little birds Mary and such a delight to have them visit your garden. I’m about to go out into the garden to do a bit of digging and I know for sure that two robins will follow me round ! XXXX

  15. What sweet bluebirds. Hoping you are now having dry weather, especially to get your outdoor projects done. Now I must run and check our fig. I think it is about the same as your fig right now.

  16. Poor little birds! At least they had a place to shelter. Happy spring to you.
