Opening the front page this morning was somewhat ominous. . . . . . . not that
we weren't prepared. But 'life-threatening' puts a different take on Winter weather.
It's not often we here in the southeast see headlines like this.
It has been bitterly cold since Monday when the first Arctic front
brought that blanket of ice. Schools, and many businesses, are still closed.
School buses can't take chances with so many young lives on slick side roads,
even though major thoroughfares are mostly cleared and sanded.
We have not left the cottage since Sunday - cabin fever has not kicked in yet.
Does this mean we are we showing our age?
We had a light snowfall yesterday afternoon, while bright sunshine flooded
the garden, making everything bright and beautiful. . . . . . .but somewhat eerie.
Even the squirrels ran and hid in their trees, and all the birds disappeared for
a while. It was rather otherworldly.
This morning the sunshine is gorgeous and there is not a
breath of wind - all this will change.
Tonight will be a killer.
Our low is predicted to drop to 6F (-14C) perhaps
an all time record low for February around here.
Soup is on. Firewood stacked at the door. Taps will drip.
Netflix should arrive - it's running late as mail missed a delivery day.
Extra blankets, throws, and cashmere covered hot water bottles at the ready.
We are prepared.
