Capital memories....................

Washington Monument - December 2010

It had snowed a couple of inches before we arrived in our nation's Capital on Friday...........but roads and sidewalks were cleared and the atmosphere was definitely full of holiday cheer despite the nip in the air.

December evening 2010 - Washington D.C.

This is the apartment building where I lived in the 60's - top floor left hand corner.  I looked out toward beautiful old bustling Georgetown.  I walked a few blocks to my office.  I did not own a car.  I bought groceries in a tiny corner shop across the street.  I loved the city life after growing up at the English seaside.............but I was definitely homesick at times.  I was twenty and full of dreams.

The old canal running through Georgetown.

Anthropologie's Georgetown shop displaying pretty Winter outfits................style for big city streets.

 Bright Christmas windows.

The Capitol dome across the frozen Potomac River from our hotel window in Crystal City, Virginia.

Always fun to revisit the past...........memories are precious.

  2. Hi Mary, your post is wonderful. What fun to visit old memories and the beautiful city of DC. Your photos make me want to go there in the winter before Christmas. I have been there in the summer. I would really love to see the cherry blossoms and the festival. One day.

I am sitting here waiting for laundry to be done, wrapping gifts and last minute cards. If it wasn't for the last minute nothing would get done they say. AND, trust me I live it!!!

The weather was not nearly as bad as they predicted and I was very sad to miss coming to see our son and you. Sigh. Now, we are getting ready to head to Florida tomorrow. We will have Christmas with two of our daughters. It will be a joyful time with our darling children and grands. Our daughter asked us to come early because she has something planned for our Christmas gift before Christmas. It is a surprise. If it wasn't for that we could have had more time to visit Raleigh. Such is life isn't it?

I'm glad you arrived home safely and we wish you and your a wonderful Christmas celebration.

    Warm hugs and love, Jeanne

  3. Thanks for the little tour of Washington. It looks wonderful, especially the old building where you lived and the shops. I have never been there and we avoided the D.C. area on our way south last spring - too much traffic for us country folk :-) I wish you a very happy Christmas!

  4. My brother used to live in DC and we got to visit him once a year and loved the bustle of the city and especially Georgetown. Parking was a nightmare where he lived though. Have a wonderful time.
