Denmark's capital, Copenhagen has 1.5 million inhabitants, more than a quarter
of the population of the entire country.
The now 100 year old bronze statue of the Little Mermaid by Danish artist Edvard Eriksen, dates from 1913 and is the most photographed lady in Copenhagen.
Author Hans Christian Anderson's tragic little heroine gazes wistfully out to sea looking for her beloved prince.
If you, like me, have never visited Copenhagen (Bob had been before), you
might also be surprised at the size of the famous Little Mermaid statue,
expecting it to be much larger.
She is just 1.25 metres high and weighs around 175kg.
Of course I already have MY prince so am not gazing out to sea or
anywhere else thank goodness!

More statues…….under cloudy skies, but it didn't rain.
Around the city……a rather cloudy day, the only one in the Baltic.
The busy, colorful waterfront area of Nyhaven…………..
I love this cutely dressed teacher, and her group of students with matching backpacks, waiting for their tour boat….
….then scurrying to their seats, very orderly and quietly I noticed.
Plenty of restaurants in the city, including French and Italian, international dining!
Copenhagen's largest shopping area is centered around Stroget in the heart of the city.
Stroget is one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets with a wealth of shops -
budget-friendly chains to top designers.
We sauntered through some back streets where I noticed many attractive small
shops, details of which I'll share another time.
After a day spent in this beautiful city of Copenhagen, the Queen Victoria let go her
lines and proceeded out through the harbor breakwaters setting a northerly course
toward Kristiansand, Norway.

It looks like a wonderful place to sit and people-watch. I love all the hustle and bustle. The colourful building remind me so much of Newfoundland, Canada. Very similar. Deb
ReplyDeleteThanks for the day in Copenhagen. It is always a delight to see the Little Mermaid again. When I was there it was the last day of school and the teens have special customs they carry out, the particulars of which I don't remember right now, but it was interesting to watch them celebrate.

ReplyDeleteCopenhagen definitely looks to be a city of many delights.
The architecture appears most interesting and carefully preserved. It must have been both a joy and an intrigue to explore the streets and the many cafés and restaurants which you discovered. It all seems very well ordered, even the small school children, and well presented. This is definitely, as we would say, a country which works!
Oh lovely to see the colors of Scandinavia. I have a piece of amber from Denmark's shores brought to me by my niece who stayed there with a host family one summer. Denmark was not her first choice, but it was a good choice. I noticed most people wearing sensible shoes for their shopping downtown. Good for them!

*sigh* Copenhagen, or Kobenhavn, as The Great Dane says, is one of my favourite cities. I studied your street scenes, recognising buildings and cafes. I wonder if you had a chance to go into the Danish Needlework Guild shop on the Stroget - it is a treat!
