'House Proud' -

My Mother trained me young...........to keep a clean, organized and picked up house. She always worked outside the home but you could, as the old saying goes, "eat off her floors." She was a perfectionist. A hard worker, competent in everything she put her hand to. Sunday was our cleaning day. It was often the only day off from her job. She didn't rest, relax or crawl under the covers recovering from an exhausting week. She was up with the sun, the larks, or whatever birds were singing in the garden at that time of year, in her cleaning clothes, sometimes her hair tied in a scarf, the usual headgear in the 1950's prior to rollers, hooded hairdryers, blow dryers and curling irons. Back then facilities in the middle class English home was usually one bathroom with a bathtub, no shower for a quick wash, shampoo and rinse. I recall washing my hair under the taps in the kitchen sink, not easy or comfortable. Many years ago on my first visit to Florence, Italy, we stayed in a hotel that was at one time a palace. We had a suite which had only a deep tub. I recalled my childhood whilst kneeling on the hard, cold marble floor with my head under a conglomerate of gold-plated faucets while Bob assisted in rinsing off shampoo and conditioner. I complained, he laughed. Somehow I lived through it wondering why a Medici Palace in a piazza, steps away from the River Arno, couldn't be modernized. A building, historic, patinated, antiqued and gorgeous, and me, spoiled by all the mod cons of America. I soon learned of Italian history and beauty, and made a vow to return as an Italian in a future life!

My childhood Sunday mornings also became a cleaning day. . . . . .until my brother came along when I was eight. Once he was a toddler my mother decided Sunday morning cleaning was easier for her if I took him to the park for a few hours. I don't recall complaining. Pushing swings and roundabouts was more fun than vacuuming and polishing furniture.

With the winter months approaching 'housework' becomes annoying. Burning wood on the hearth is wonderful and warming, keeping up with the dust it makes is a chore. Gardening is comfortable at last, cooler days and no mosquitoes, but we have no mud room in this small house so garden debris stuck to footwear results in gritty floors requiring extra cleaning. As Christmas approaches an assortment of live greenery, berries and such make their way to the mantel, tops of armoires, stairwell etc. Things are dropped, roll under furniture, disintegrate as the weeks pass by.........and all cause more dust.  Reminders of those childhood days of vacuuming, dusting and polishing come to mind, sadly the bending and kneeling required to do a bang up job is not so easy now. So, we do what we can, promising to declutter, downsize, perhaps hire a cleaner, anything to 'make life easier' and take away some of the stress of keeping house more perfect. Fewer years on our calendar mean we need time to do exciting things while we can.

By the way, did you know dust is invisible to most grown men . . . . . . . .and small birds, such as my wren, are extremely 'house proud', just as my dear mother was.

Ironstone and cleaning up. . . . . . . . . . .

The sun forgot to wake up this morning.
Warmer than yesterday but overcast and dull.
Other than the foraging squirrels and many birds at the feeders,
it looks uninviting in the winter garden. The lights, garlands
and wreaths are down, packed away, or piled in the 'yard waste' barrel
awaiting the city truck which will soon be noisily trundling up the street.

These photos were taken yesterday when it was bright but very chilly, evidence
of the sun made the south facing dining room pleasant, but showed up a veil of dust!

Inside there is much to do. Christmas decor has disappeared into
green plastic boxes, pushed to the depths of the attic, leaving residue
on shelves and surfaces. Bright holly berries are now dried to deep burgundy,
leaves crisp and crinkled, tiny stars shine from dark corners, and silver glitter
has left dusty trails across the floor.
Later today I will start on the cleaning.
I need to wash all the china on the dresser and do some editing/rearranging.
For instance, move that cheese keeper and its tray down lower to
see it better - it's a great piece of very old utilitarian ironstone.

Who doesn't like antique/vintage white ironstone?
Go HERE to read the amazing post by my good friend Loi. You will gasp over his
huge exquisite collection, and learn the interesting history of ironstone china.
Loi of TONE ON TONE, both the shop and blog, is the go to person for everything
I love and would love to have for my own home.
From that current post I'm coveting both the fish platter with strainer and, most of all,
the magnificent Stilton cheese keeper/dome!

Things have become somewhat static this past year and my decorating mojo
apparently took a vacation. Looking about me I feel it's on the way back, yippee!

Do you have decorating projects for January?
Do tell us what you might be planning.

Enjoying the Christmas preparations. . . . . . . . .

Phew! I feel a bit like this today after so much weekend baking.
Bob propped me up by staying out of my hair all those hours in the kitchen.
I like to get on with my baking with Christmas music, no conversation,
and a nice glass of Harvey's Bristol Cream sherry nearby!
Memories of childhood Christmas baking days with
my mother fill my thoughts and make me happy.
The kitchen is now a mess with a layer flour everywhere, bits of pastry
dough stuck on the floor, a raisin or two rolling under the island,
and sticky handles on the refrigerator. I hate a grubby kitchen
so you know what I'll be doing today.

BTW, I love my pair of woolly mice - bought in Asheville, NC last year -
they came out of the storage box again for Christmas. I think they'll be
staying around from now on, not going back into hiding. I can see them
depicting happenings in our daily life through all the months ahead - so
keep an eye out for them when I post in the new year.
Their names you may ask? Why Bob and Mary of course!

Yes, today I start some house cleaning now the messy bits of making
the cottage festive are completed.
With an open house on Christmas Eve - come and gobble
up the goodies if you're nearby - I do like the house to sparkle in the candlelight.
We still have not started burning our wood due to continued warm weather so
the dust is not bad - but a fire in the hearth will be enjoyed over Christmas
even if we have to keep the doors open!

Housework v. Decorating . . . . . . .

Thinking back over a lifetime of 'keeping house' while balancing on a step stool
a few days back, I gave a long hard look about me and wondered about today's
household cleaning chores, both my own and others.
With one of the hubby's old white sport socks over my hand, and a spray bottle
of Windex, I was up here cleaning the crystals and other parts of the kitchen chandelier,
moving on to woodwork armed with Murphy's Oil Soap - cabinets and trim - then
washing the floor with Bona and mop.
I used to almost enjoy housework, especially once completed. Looking about and
seeing the furniture and woodwork sparkle, the lack of dust 'bunnies' in the corners,
smelling that clean fragrance from the products used such as lemon oil, made it all worthwhile.
Now, I find it hard going. Bending, stretching, the difficulty of getting back up from the
aging knees, and with the current hip problem, quite honestly, house 'work' has
become a painful drag.
So what do I do to make things easier on myself? Hubby helps and would do it all,
bless his heart, but he wouldn't do it like I would! A maid service would be a last
resort - I've never had anyone clean my home and don't know if I want that…..yet!
So I'll keep on best I can for the time being.

As for decorating?
That part of keeping house I love. Day to day, week to week, little tweaks and
changes, redoing vignettes, arranging flowers, moving things around.
However, the big thrust now is decorating for Christmas.
Thanksgiving is nothing more than moving the pumpkins around a bit - we will not be
eating here, or having company, and we head to the coast the following day for the weekend.

Digging through the attic areas, on hands and knees, to pull out the storage boxes will
be the hubby's job soon.
I will decorate as usual, although I don't do as much outdoors with lights any longer.
The faux tree will appear in the gazebo decorated with Nature's pretties I've collected.
I so enjoy seeing it outside the kitchen windows, lighting up the winter nights.
I may look for a small fresh tree for inside, taking pleasure in hanging cherished
ornaments collected over the years.
The wooden snowflakes will dangle in the dining room window. The candles
will glow once darkness cools the night, Christmas music will fill the air, and the fire
will burn in the hearth.
Thankfully 'home for Christmas' will happen as always.

So, what are your feelings about house work and cleaning chores?
Do you enjoy them? Do you have help from a cleaning company,
and if so, how did you find a competent, reliable one whose employees
take care of your much-loved, precious things?
Does your spouse/partner give you a hand?

As for decorating, I just know you will soon be sharing your beautiful
holiday items - this is always such a bright and beautiful time of year - and
I enjoy seeing all your creative endeavors here on your blogs.
