Good Books and My Love of Penguins. . . . . . . .

If I was ever able to take another journey to Antarctica, I would go in a heartbeat.
Main reason you may ask. Definitely to spend more time among penguins.

Penguins, those adorable flightless birds who waddle around on land, and
swim like fish in the Southern Ocean, always seem to be popping back into my life.
The recent beautiful gift of a carved penguin named Fiona from Jannett at her shop
Barouke HERE, is bringing me such happiness daily.

Then, coming across my little wooden box with the penguin on top - purchased in
Ushuaia, Argentina, the southern most city in the world as a souvenir before we sailed
out on the most exciting adventure ever. I just now have realized it's perfect for
some of my rings and it's on my dresser where I can enjoy it and the memories
 of another place, another time.

Yesterday, over coffee with Mr. Johnny as he took a break from making
our walk-in shower tile and grout look like new, I showed him some penguin
photos I took on that expedition, and he loved them - even asked if I would share
one with him which I was happy to do. Mr. Johnny is a true artist, painting
colorful canvasses, writing songs, playing guitar in his other life away from tiles
 grout and caulking.
When a real artist, such as he, reassures you that you too are creative and
have a good 'eye' for composition, that's always a generous compliment.

Then there's the book which arrived at Christmas!
The Penguin Lessons - What I Learned From a Remarkable Bird -
by Tom Michell
Such a huge story packed into a fabulous little book.
Heartwarming, witty, funny, and oh so sad at the end. . . . . .
well actually not come to think of it!
The last couple of chapters were difficult and brought tears.
Then, turning a page, the Epilogue appeared (no spoilers here
in case you are thinking of reading the book), and it was so brilliant
I was able to put the tissues away and start smiling.
I do love a happy ending, don't you?

Two other 'Christmas books' were waiting in the wings.
Which one first - a hard decision because I'm anxious to devour both.
It was a toss up. I decided to start with Juman Malouf's
The Trilogy of Two
This book is categorized under young adult literature and is Ms. Malouf's
first novel. After reading a short article about her and this book, I was
drawn to it by the fact it's a story of twins, and that she did all the
phenomenal and quite addictive b/w illustrations of some very
unusual characters in her story.
I've read a couple of chapters and I'm finding it enchanting.
I feel it would not be appropriate for very young children, more for
age ten and up. I feel quite at home reading her excellent prose, then
anxious to turn the page to see the next eccentric character brought to
life via Ms. Malouf's marvelous dexterity with pencils.

Do you have a stack of great books awaiting?
With cold weather coming what do we require to make an afternoon
cozy - perhaps a fire in the hearth, a comfy chair, a warming drink
in a favorite mug. . . . . . . . and an interesting and beautiful book.

The Back Page - my thanks, and my 'WORD' - - - - - - -

Fiona is back in the news. . . . . . .and I just have to show you those other
'wish list' gifts which actually arrived at the cottage on Christmas Eve.
For those of you who questioned whether 'my Santa' was named Bob - yes,
 he definitely was!
Thank you Santa Bob, you were extremely generous. I may just do
the 'wish list' via the blog again next Christmas as it seems to work for
those gift shopping challenged men out there - perhaps you have
one also!

Having recently acquainted you with fab Fiona HERE, and recalling memories
of my amazing personal experience with Antarctic penguins a few years ago,
I added this book to my list.
What a delightful true story - I'm about halfway through and loving
reading about young Englishman Tom Michell's 1975 arrival in
Buenos Aires, Argentina to teach in a prestigious boarding school. . . . .
then rescuing and adopting a penguin whom he named Juan Salvador.
The story is absurd and wonderful - a classic in the making.

The other books I will tell you about another time - they are waiting
in the wings and I'm anxious to read both.

Yes, the plum colored chunky, very cozy Lou & Grey tunic sweater arrived too.
I love that it's long, tunic length, so can be worn over just leggings with tall
or short boots  - perfect comfort and ladylike, important at this advanced age!
BTW, have you tried the new light fleece-lined tights or leggings?
I bought a pair and find them really great - a good alternative to more restrictive
skinny pants - totally opaque and lightweight, not too thick, and so soft.
Mine are by Simply Vera Wang at Kohl's.

On the left on my dresser, Dior's beautiful fragrance, Escale à Portofino.
It too was on my list, and is now hard to find - most stores have discontinued
stocking it - but great retailer Nordstrom came through as always, found
Santa Bob a bottle and shipped it in time. It's a large one and I will have to make
it last a long time just in case it eventually becomes irreplaceable.
My first bottle, found on a cruise ship, became my favorite fragrance immediately.

*************

I'm making this my 2015 wrap-up, yes the 'back page'.
I'm so ready for this new year - who knows what it will bring
for each of us. My biggest hope is for good health for myself
and my loved ones. Hope for a chance to travel somewhere new,
but hopefully have lots of time at home to do things I enjoy.
I hold great hope for the world to become a more peaceful and
better place. . . . . .for its people, the animals - wild and domestic - Nature's
wild and beautiful landscapes, the environment, and especially the oceans.
So, perhaps not unexpected, my 'word' for 2016 has to be HOPE.

Thank you for following my blog through yet another busy year.
You helped make 2015 a very special time by reading my words,
complimenting me on my photography, enjoying my travels from your
'armchair', and then leaving such generous, often funny, always greatly
appreciated, comments. By doing all that and often more, you then gave
me the opportunity to 'follow' you, the best friends anyone could ever have.
Coming up soon will be the start of my 8th year of blogging. Yes, I plan to
continue, using my blog as my creative outlet and my personal journal.
Although some are quitting their blogs, or moving to other social media
platforms, I only blog! I love blogging, I love you, I don't want to change a thing.
So, hope to see you here for a long time, you will always be welcomed.

Recalling the past ------ special travel stories remembered.

On this day just two years ago I embarked the
M/S Expedition and sailed away from Ushuaia, Argentina,
southernmost city in the world, on my exciting journey and trip
of a lifetime, to Antarctica.
Never did I expect to travel to all seven continents.
All have provided special memories . . . . . . this one
was the most amazing.

If you were following me back then you might recall the awesome
beauty I was able to photograph in the Southern Ocean. With landings
including the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and on the Antarctic
Peninsula, we followed the great British explorer Sir. Ernest Shackleton's
incredible January 1915 journey on his doomed ship Endurance and, as I write,
the 100th anniversary is probably being celebrated at the bottom of the world.

If you missed those posts, are interested in this area, would like to see more
of the incredible wildlife, or are planning to visit Antarctica some day - you won't
be sorry I assure you - take a look.
If you need tips/info for an expedition trip I'll be happy to assist if I can.

Photo Challenge for June - Stormy Weather

I'm cruising and have to make this quick!  Joining in Donna's always fun Personal Photo Challenge.
All pics taken with my Olympus SP-590UZ with a little editing via PicMonkey.

A sunny welcome followed by a sudden and quite unexpected snowstorm - even the
penguins seemed startled - and I was grateful I had a big warm parka and gloves.

The old city of Hue, Vietnam - December 2012
It poured down hard but was so very beautiful, the rainstorms went on and on - sightseeing
was definitely soggy!  It was of course "the wet", one of the two seasons in this part of the world.

Hue, Vietnam, still in the pelting rain - "taxi anyone?"
Big sales on plastic ponchos that day in December, 2012
