Earthly Delights. . . . .

My little 'garden of 'earthly delights'
surprises every morning when I raise the
blinds and the early light of day shines in.

The hyacinth bulb has babies popping out - fitting a family
into the vase is now difficult!
I must keep an eye on it so it won't fall over.
Perfume is almost overwhelming.......and I love it.

Welcome to these sunny mornings.
Apple Blossom amaryllis still a delight.
Basil being snipped for supper dishes.
Slow going in the other pots but I can wait - what
 else is there to do!

Are you an indoor gardener in winter?
I hope you have lovely perfumed blooms brightening
 your long, cold days.

  1. Dearest Mary,
What an added bonus those hyacinth babies!
Enjoy your indoor perfume; my favorite smell I must say.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. I think it may be a struggle - it's pushing out of the side of the bulb! I feel like a midwife waiting to assist in the birth, lol!!!! What we do for fragrance.....and love!

  2. Dear Mary,
Yes, I love indoor gardening in January and February, particularly. My lovely Apple Blossom is almost finished, and the hyacinths have gone over, so I'm thinking of replacing those, as I noticed some new shoots in the store the other day. Hyacinth's fragrance is strong, but oh, so sweet!
    Have a good day!

    1. My fourth Apple blossom bud is now open. The first three blooms still look good - what a beauty and how powerful one bulb can be - this is the third year it has bloomed for me!
I'm going to search for another hyacinth - the perfume is wafting through the downstairs rooms, I want one upstairs too!
Take care - hope you are both well.

  3. I have paperwhites, but I find their aroma offensive. I would enjoy the hyacinths, but their aroma would be too much. I have African Violets minding their own business. I am trying to figure out if the beautiful poinsettias should go upstairs for now their time being past. I have an ivy and an Easter cactus biding time up there. Perhaps it's time for a switch.

    1. I'm with you on paperwhites Vee which is why I don't grow them. I will plant this hyacinth bulb in the garden later - hope it comes back next year. Its fragrance is awesome and seems to come in waves rather than be overpowering all the time. I wish I had more windows and light - preferably with wide windowsills!

  4. Luckily, I can still garden on my lanai since moving to Florida! I can smell your hyacinth from here!

    1. . . . . I bet you can, it's the most perfumed one I've ever had, just awesome, and now another tiny bloom pushing its way out of the bulb - which was just $2.99 at LIDL!!!!!

  5. Lovely hyacinth! They will grow in the garden, here anyway, but I find that after a couple of years they disappear.

  6. Even though the basil plant is small, it looks healthy and "smells" beautiful. After all, how much herb do we need to snip off each evening?

  7. Dear Mary, when I look out of the big window I see my little "garden" on the balcony - primrose flowering, narcissus and muscari struggling to bloom soon, and a helleborus. Inside only two orchids (no scent, but beauty).
Your amaryllis looks so lovely! The hyacinth I will buy today, too, but for outside - inside they are too overpowering for me - though I love them. (Same with lilac).

  8. Hyacinths really can be overwhelming, fragrance-wise, as can freesia. I love them both but would not want them in my bedroom, only in my living room or kitchen. The tulips my sister brought last Saturday are beautiful but not long-lasting, and have almost no scent at all. Still, they make a welcome reminder of the not-so-far away spring in my flat.

  9. Dear Mary,
You definitely have the right idea. Your little garden is all One needs. Always a new surprise is waiting for you in the morning.
Even though it is very cold here I have my little greenhouse and it is filled with beautiful color. Even my kumquat tree is bearing fruit. The fruit is delightfully sour/sweet which will chase away any virus that might come this way.

  11. All so beautiful …… my problem is that hyacinths fragrance can sometimes be too much for me a bit like lilies but I still love them ! I love gardening but, I’m not very good with indoor plants …. I either over water them or under water them !!! XXXX

  13. Your early year posts with your pretty amaryllis always makes me say, "Dang! I forgot to get one!" Gorgeous. Pretty colors of the spring garden indoors.

    Love to you and yours,

  14. I have a beautiful orchid that only has three flowers on it but it has been blooming since long before Christmas. A hyacinth also bloomed over Christmas. I must remember to get another amaryllis, yours is a beauty.

  15. I was just thinking I need to remember hyacinths to have some growing in the house. They are so gorgeous. More bulbs needed right here, now if I would just remember in the fall!
