On the box they named this amaryllis 'Charming' so I was expecting blooms
similar to the one in the last photo on this post. . . . . . also named 'Charming',
a bulb grown a few years ago.
This new one is the bulb purchased before Christmas.
However, like much of nature, surprises happen. Many are forgivable,
actually quite acceptable, and often very beautiful to behold.
May I introduce you to what I believe is the early blooming amaryllis
named 'Lemon Star.'
A very tall plant, now measuring 31 inches from top of bulb to tip of blooms!
Sturdy, with no need of a support - though I did tie a little jute bow to hold
leaves to stem in case they flopped - this is a pristine white beauty with
slightly ruffled petal edges and a lemon/lime center. This morning in the
sunlight there are two blooms fully open. Two more buds, still tightly closed
wait in the wings so to speak, so I'm hoping for open flowers to enjoy for
another week at least.
Do you get the feeling I love these special bulbs of beauty?
Do you spy another bulb now has a stem with a bud?
Wondering what that one is - it's from another year so will
be a surprise.
This was Amaryllis 'Charming' with touches of pink, in 2018 - very lovely.
Sunday sunlight is fading now and rain is coming in for the remainder
of the milder day. Much colder tomorrow with full sun but no chance of
of the milder day. Much colder tomorrow with full sun but no chance of
snow here yet. In fact the fig tree is already showing some new green
buds and the bluebirds are back at the feeders.
FYI - If you're a fan and nature lover, it's a special night on TV today!
So far, the new Creatures series has not yet made it to German TV, but I am sure it is only a question of time; although I much prefer to view it un-dubbed in the original version.
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are stunning!
You will love it - and the scenery makes even me want to live in Yorkshire!!!
DeleteThat is a lovely amaryllis! I usually have only seen the red ones at Christmas time so that is a beautiful surprise indeed! I love the series All Creatures Great & Small so thanks for the reminder about tonight's show. I also loved those books when I read them years ago...
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the new season Ellen - each episode never disappoints!
DeleteDear Mary, I have noticed your amaryllis in the background of your recent blog postings. It looked different from those which I admired last year. And what a stunner it turned out to be.
ReplyDeleteThree blooms out today - you just know I'll have to share more photos soon!
DeleteLovely flowers!
ReplyDeleteSo clean looking - I really love this white one in the dining room.
DeleteDear Mary, you convinced me to try my luck with amaryllis next year (I already made a note in my new desk calendar - otherwise I might forget. And I am really curious how the German bulbs of "Charming" will turn out). As I have a huge window in the parlour in Bavaria "I see them" ... and their humble and somewhat abrupt start to new leaves I will hide on my balcony.
ReplyDeleteI adore "All Creatures Great and Small" - here you reminded me to bring my DVDs from Berlin to rural Bavarian pastures :-) Britta x
You will enjoy watching them bloom - worth every penny they cost - and you can get them to re-bloom for years it you're patient.
DeleteGlad you like All Creatures.... too - the Yorkshire scenery is wonderful and the acting is great. I love programs set in that time frame when life was much simpler!
Possibly my favourite bulb - so elegant.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're growing one this winter Pat!
DeleteDearest Mary,
ReplyDeleteThat is a gigantic Amaryllis!
But it sure is rewarding you with beautiful flowers.
And within days you will see the other bud unfold...
It must depend on the variety of fig trees no doubt, as our Florentine fig is not yet showing buds...
How lovely to spot a bluebird at this time of the year.
We had a severe weather warning for thunder, wind and rain and just now it is calm.
Hugs,
Mariette
It's getting so tall but hasn't fallen over thankfully!
DeleteMy fig tree is a Celeste Mariette - huge and will need another light prune later.
Mary you seem to be lucky with your Celestial or Sugar fig and it indeed might be earlier than our Florentine fig.
DeleteHello to the dear little bluebird. Lemon Star is gorgeous, what a delightful surprise you have had. It looks in the peak of perfection in your brilliant photos. xx
ReplyDeleteTrish, I'm loving this one and the three blooms are out now, one more to go!
DeleteThat's a beauty! What a spectacular start to the year.
ReplyDeleteFunny how one bulb can be such a beauty John - it really lights up the entire room.
DeleteThanks for sharing the elegant flowers. I feel as if I caught a spring wind.
ReplyDeleteLovely comment - I know how in your country beautiful flowers are truly appreciated.
DeleteWishing you a good new year in Japan.
What a beautiful flower! I have never tried to grow them. Do they have a scent?
ReplyDeleteNo scent Penny but still beautiful!
DeleteMary, my amaryllis is blooming now too but for the life of me I can't remember the name. I posted it on my blog this morning. It is really beautiful. I love yours too! I love that photo of the bluebird, so cute!! Mine haven't been out for a few days, it got cold here again. I see some signs of trees budding up here in SC also. I just found out the other day, the deer at the top off my fig tree. I'm going to have to put a cover over it made out of chicken wire so they leave it alone!
ReplyDeleteLemon Star is lovely, she is perfection personified - I am always amazed that such beauty can appear out of such an ordinary looking bulb. Long may she last for you and continue to give you pleasure and delight.
ReplyDeleteYour Lemon Star is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI really like the quote you started with too.
I can just imagine the melting darkness with the shine of those beautiful flowers.
Lemon Star is a stunner! And you have more wonderful blooms to look forward to! I hope she lasts a long time. My amaryllis is slowly beginning to open. I'll have to go and look to see what her name is.
ReplyDeleteI prefer weather to be a bit colder with bright sunshine than the grey rain in our forecast for the rest of the week.
Enjoy those bluebirds!
