Fading beauty -

The Amaryllis Chronicles are over once again. The photos above were of last year's blooms which I had photographed but never posted - but this year the blooms looked similar and were enjoyed so much during the dreary days of January.
Come late spring the bulbs will once again be planted out in the garden. One year they surprised with gorgeous blooms in summer, other years just tall bright green leaves waved in the hot summer sun, somehow surviving while awaiting yet another potting shed rest in September and October. Potting up again came in November ready for blooming in January.

All this may sound like work!  It rather is but is so worth it.  I used to chuck my bulbs out into the compost thinking they were done after one blooming, but thanks to my dear friend Gina in Utah ~ Art and Alfalfa I learned how to keep them going year after year.

Will they bloom another year? Who knows. Patience and TLC is required and I'm willing to try again.

  1. My sister was just asking about amaryllis. I will have to refer her here. It is wonderful to get the most out of plants. The first photo is lovely.

  3. How we love the amaryllis! My husband and I got two more this year. One was supposed to be red and the other was white with red on the edges. One bloomed as it said it would, like the photo on the box but that red one? It bloomed a solid white, a DOUBLE bloom! (I mean a double bloom on one flower, it had 4 flowers on the same stalk.) We were really surprised by that! I have a photo on my post today. That photo is not as pretty as it was in person! The amaryllis is a joy!

  4. Beautiful. I was given a lovely red Amaryllis, just before Christmas. It’s taken a while to get going but now the bud is looking good and strong and a second bud has made its entrance too! I’m looking forward to sharing the photos! 😁

  5. Mine both failed miserably this year, so disappointing.

  6. My comment could be identical to Elizabethd's. The first one was about six inches tall with a wilted bloom when I took it out of the box. It never did anything more so it was tossed before Christmas. The second has grown several tall leaves with no sign of a bud. I'm still waiting, but am quite sure it is a lost cause. I remember how you got them to bloom again using the method you describe. I'll look forward to seeing the process again if you choose to blog about it.

  7. Mine didn't do very well this year, but I'm going to plant it in the garden, just in case it will perk up there!
