December nights . . . . .

Last evening brought an unexpected surprise.
Following the damp day, the temperature plummeted into the 30's
around dusk.
A pleasant visit from granddaughter Jasmin included her artwork
on the kitchen blackboard. . . . . . . . and, no sooner had she finished,
when I noticed through the window SNOWFLAKES falling, big fluffy
ones! They lasted only about 15 minutes but enough to mark the
calendar "First Snow" of this winter!

Notice Fiona the penguin is now wearing her red muffler!
Definitely ready for winter.

We finished our decorating for the holidays by putting out
the flood lights. We have white fairy lights along the porch railings
and the arbor, but on the dark nights the floods give the cottage a
warm appearance from the street which our neighbors seem
 to enjoy.
Captured just before the sky turns really dark, you get to see
our tall oak trees. . . . . and, although leaves have been falling
for several weeks, there are still plenty more to keep us raking
and blowing for a while longer!

Are you hoping for a White Christmas?
I'd love just an inch or two of light powder covering the ground and
dusting the trees and shrubs.
Then I'll be taking bird photos again - be patient with me - you
know how I love them in the snow!

  1. Yes, I would love to see a white Christmas. It's cold enough in this part of the state, but not even a flurry yet.
I can see why your neighbors enjoy your house lit up so beautifully. Really pretty with the tall trees in the background. I think this photo would make a lovely Christmas card. Always love your bird photos.

  3. I've never seen your house from that vantage; it is a perfect little gingerbread house in a wood! How wonderful to get both a visit from a beloved and some snowflakes. xx

  4. Your house looks so beautiful all lit up!

No snow here yet in Illinois either, if you can believe that. All we've had is a dusting a few weeks ago that was gone in a few hours. I'd love just a little bit of snow for Christmas, but so far, it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

  5. After four days without power over a lousy 3–4 inch snowstorm, I am really not thrilled with snow just now. Ask me Christmas Eve. ☺️ Your home looks Christmas card perfect...so charming and lovely.

  6. I would LOVE to see a White Christmas. How magical your snowfall sounded. We are supposed to have a fairly warm December until the end of the month, then a colder few months. We'll see if we get snow. I think we've only had snow at Christmas twice since we've lived here.

  7. I clicked Publish before commenting on your pretty cottage. The flood lights really make it glow against the night. It looks so warm and welcoming.

  8. How lovely that you saw the first snow flakes of this season just as your granddaughter had finished her drawing on the blackboard!
It's been years since we last had a White Christmas, but I remember it well; the snow was so thick on the ground that my sister, who usually drives over when we gather at our parents' for Christmas Eve, decided to walk.
Your house looks wonderful, like something from a Christmas movie!

  9. The first snowfall is always exciting to most of us...even in the Midwest where we get plenty and sometimes grit our teeth in battling through it to walk or drive! It's a little odd, Al has our three homes~Chicago, Michigan, and Asheville on his weather App. Today he showed me his Weather Channel screen: 35 degrees in all three places!

I would love to see some pics of Jasmin (if she wouldn't mind), seems so long ago that she was a teen visiting and traveling with you and Bob.

    Happy Holidays, my friend!😘

  10. Yes would love some snow, that would be very pretty but I don't like the ice and sludge that comes later! especially as the three men here hae to go out in it for work so I won't wish too hard :) I do enjoy decorating our home and fairy lights most of all.

  11. Dear Mary,
And I love your bird pictures in the snow. I know how you have been wishing for a white Christmas. Maybe a little snow now and then will do the trick. We are supposed to get snow in the next day or so. It will be our first.

  12. How fun you had some snow during this Christmas season! Your home looks so pretty lit up at night! My white Christmas will be white sandy beaches.

  13. Dearest Mary,
Anyone can have the white Christmas but I prefer the ones we're used to here in the South.
    Love your bay window!
Our 1st home in Georgia had flood lights installed; we did not build it...
Our present home has none as we both are more for Eco Friendly lights and have our entire inside energy savings bulbs. All our appliance is Energy Saving and so on. Home is very well insulated, with a special Interlock Aluminum roof: https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2013/08/our-home-with-aluminum-interlock.html
    Enjoy the Advent Season!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  14. Serendipity. A little drawing, and a little snow. The only powdery stuff we get here is the kinda dust storms that cover everything like pollen. Thankfully, haven't had that in awhile. Enjoy visits from your feathered friends.
