Pink fun

Have you ever met a kid who doesn't love macaroni and cheese?  Have you ever found a ready-made one that's so good the kids have to fight off the adults to even get a bite?
Last week before heading to camp, Jasmin suggested we have a kitchen day and bake up her favorite macaroni and cheese casserole.......and she wanted to help!

Despite the heat outside, cranking up the oven (and the a/c) seemed a way to give some kitchen tips to a budding chef.  Learning to grate three cheeses without adding fingers for instance!  Boiling penne pasta - more elegant than actual macaroni - until it still has a little bite.  Cooking a Bearnaise sauce from scratch without lumps!  Making the best breadcrumbs for a crispy top from whole grain rather than white bread.

Our lunch - we didn't drink the wine but it adds a touch of pink - and DH and I indulged later at dinner, a glass of chilled rose for a hot night!  I love to add sliced tomatoes to the top - you can see the ones we've picked from our garden on the counter and more ripening on the windowsill.

The best recipe............British cook Ruth Watson's Posh Three-Cheese Macaroni which she says, and I agree wholeheartedly, is fit for the Queen!  It takes much more time than opening a bland box......but is worth every minute in the kitchen with a favorite assistant!

Happy Pink Saturday......whether you're planning a kitchen day, or dipping your fingers and toes in a cool ocean, before heading to a nice seaside restaurant where someone else is slaving over the hot stove! Stop by to see Beverly of How Sweet The Sound, our hostess - lots of fun pink posts awaiting your visit.

  1. I suppose it's something like this that gives Mac and Cheese its grand reputation. I'll have to try it sometime, and see whether it helps me to change my mind!
Lucky you, to have such a delightful cooking companion.

  2. That looks fabulous. I never make that dish but I think I will look for the recipe now.

  3. the pictures look like a breakfast or lunch at a bed and breakfast honeymoon cabin, adorable

  4. G'morn Mary ~ Hope you have leftovers, I'm on the way! Everything looks so delicious ... how could anyone not like mac 'n cheese!

    Have a lovely PINK summer's weekend ~

  5. Good morning Mary, I too make home made mac and cheese but not like this. You and Jasmin made me hungry for some of that delicious mac and cheese. How wonderful that Jasmin loves to make things with her grandma. I love when my grands do that. Molly makes fudge with me. I must try slicing tomatoes on top. Mmmmmm. Love the pink Rose' wine too. Smile.

We are having a wonderful visit with our oldest daughter. We almost never have quality time together. A lot of talking going on here and very little visiting with my blogging friends. Sigh!

    Have a wonderful weekend Mary.
    Love, Jeanne

  6. We had homemade macaroni and cheese last night for dinner! Instead of adding our home grown tomatoes to the top, I roasted them seperately in the over with olive oil, sea salt and fresh cracked pepper...yummy!

  7. Hi Mary!
This mac & cheese looks absolutely fit for a queen or princess....I will definitely give it a try as mac & cheese is a popular dish in my family! I have never put tomotoes on top...great idea!
    Thanks for sharing!

  16. Hi Mary Sweetie...
Oh my gosh, I love this dish. I must try it for sure. Wow, I know what's for dinner at your house tonight. I never thought about using penne pasta with mac and cheese.

Well you got me wide awake. I am off to the kitchen to find out what's for dinner at Country Wings tonight.

I hope you have a beautiful Saturday sweet friend. Hello to sweet Jasmin. Love ya girl.

Many hugs and much love to you, Sherry

  17. Hi Mary,
Your kitchen is so charming!!! The dish looks great as well!
    Happy PS!

  18. Mac and cheese is a favorite in our house. Tomatoes on the top is a new idea. Take care and have a lovely weekend.

  19. A Ruth Watson recipe and Emma Bridgewater Black Toast dishes, parfait!
Here at the Presbytere this is one of our favourite suppers, we use penne too but our bowls are from M&S!!

  20. OK, now you have done it. I am hungry for good mac & cheese. Oh and the tomatoes on top would be lovely. We just got our first tomato yesterday from our garden, but there are many green ones. Hooray! Sometimes we don't get tomatoes because we don't have enough sunshine.

  21. What beautiful memories you are cooking up in your lovely kitchen! She's one lucky grand-girlie!

  22. Jasmin just gets more special by the day...and wanting to learn to cook makes here a perfect girl ( in my eyes, at least). Hope she is enjoying camp.

  23. Happy Pink Saturday, dear Mary. Thank you for the help with The Last Unicorn. We haven't visited yet.

This dish looks and sounds delicious. I have placed sliced tomatoes on mine before. They add such a nice taste - and look pretty, too.
