Coming to America - so long ago!

Autumn is a wonderful time for me.
Many of the special things in my life happened in October through the years.
Celebrations, even in this time of a pandemic, will continue, though
in different ways.

Today it's 58 years since I arrived here in the United States of America as a
legal immigrant. An entire day spent at the American Embassy in London early
in 1962, several months prior to getting my paperwork in order to enter this country,
included interviews, medical exams, swearing to uphold laws, signing papers
and such. I was sponsored by an agency who would help place me in a job.
I was almost 19 and planned to come for a year to work as a secretary in
Washington D.C., save some money, travel a bit. . . . . all which I did,
then return home to England where I would settle down again.

What happened?
 His name is Bob, haha!!!!!

Thanks Bob for all the great years in America. . . . . . . .and all the amazing
places we've seen around the world.

Today the rains are pouring down here but it's still a great day for me.
Hope your day is good too.

  1. If that is not a reason to celebrate - even on a rainy day - I don't know what is! Congratulations to BOTH of you; this day will be as important for Bob as for yourself, with all its life-changing consequences it brought.
So many people around the world relocate for love, including my own late husband, who left Yorkshire to come to Germany, where he did not have a job, didn't even speak the language and knew only one single person - me. He never regretted his decision.
Here's to you, dear Mary, and Bob, and the country that took you in!

  2. What a nice story of you immigrating legally and meeting your love, Bob.

  3. What a lovely post Mary. A celebration of a wonderful life with Bob ... it was meant to be. Enjoy you day/evening together and I am sure that there is going to be good food and drink on the agenda. Congratulations on the wonderful years you have spent together. I shall raise a glass to you both tonight. Much love. XXXX

  4. Thank you Bob! If not for you I would not have met Mary!

  5. Dearest Mary,
Quite a memorable day for you and also for Bob!
Yes, most Americans have NO clue as to what it took for you and for both of us to come to the USA as a legal immigrant. It makes us angry at times that nowadays, many liberals promote open borders and want to hand out free healthcare to ALL. We got screened almost inside/out to prove that we were healthy...
Times have changed but still I feel it as a privilege for being able to live here and being a law abiding American Citizen.

  6. How lovely, Mary! The adventure you knew you were going to have has turned out a much grander affair. Congratulations!

  7. Yay, Bob! 😁 How soon did he come along?

  8. Wonderful pictures and sweet story, congratulations

  9. My family emigrated to the United States in 1956. The four of us escaped from East Germany and one year later were given permission to go to America.
I know how you feel Mary. And having a good man by your side is even more wonderful.

  10. Mary, I'm happy you made that journey and stayed! Thank you, Bob!!! Congratulations on the anniversary. Happy October!!!

  11. I love this story. Yay for Bob! Let the adventure continue!

  12. How lovely that Bob was the reason for you staying in your adopted country all those years ago. We are having very hot weather here in South Africa, Mary. Have a wonderful Sunday. Jo

  13. What a sweet memory it must be for you. Alas, I didn't last long in the US. One year was all I could take. Missed being close to different countries and cultures. But your is a success story.

  14. 58 years is a long time. I am so glad you met Bob. What nice pictures of Bob and then of the two of you. Congratulations!

  15. It certainly turned out to be the choice of a lifetime. Congrats! You two have certainly made all those years worth it. Stay well. Have a good week.

  16. what love got to do it with.....and still in the US....Congratulations!

  17. I would love to hear the story of how you two met and started your life together! :-)
