No journey home yet!

It was to take place this month.
Now everything is cancelled as International travel
is still not really safe.
It's been two years since I've been able to travel
to England due to the pandemic situation.
I don't think I've stayed away that long in the
almost 59 years since emigrating to
the USA!

Torquay, Devon - circa 1960's

Torquay - Last visit home - May 2019

Am I homesick?
You bet I am!

We have rescheduled everything and now hope to make it
across the pond in September.
Family and friends over there think this is the best plan
and, sad as it is, we have to agree. Hoping by then life will be
better, perhaps not normal, but safer and more cheery and
manageable for travel long distances from the comfort of home.

  1. Oh, Mary. I do hope your trip comes off in September. It's so disappointing to keep cancelling and rescheduling. We had a school trip to Barcelona and Paris planned for November (in which I was included in spite of being retired since I know the students and had promoted it a lot), but it's just been cancelled. Very disappointing for the students once again. But it's best to be prudent during these times.

    1. I know that's very disappointing for you Lorrie - it would have been a great trip. Hopefully you can go with them next year as you would be such a marvelous addition to the student group.
      Chin up!

  2. Hi Mary. I just came over from Mark's blog and read about your diet and anti-inflammatory needs. May I suggest linseed which is excellent for this. I buy a packet of golden linseed from the grocery store and put it through a coffee grinder and take a teaspoon a day. You can also sprinkle it on breakfast food. Excellent anti-inflammatory. Good luck with everything and your proposed visit to England.

    1. Thanks for that suggestion Rachel. I do add flaxseed to my cereal however should perhaps be grinding it as you do the linseed which is similar.
Thanks for stopping by - I've often seen you comment at John Grey's blog!
      Enjoy your weekend.

  3. I am sure you will be fine then. The situation in the UK s actually very good now and we get the announcement on travel later this wee. The signs for sensible safe travel are on the up - the only real caution now is the fear that a new variant could potentially undermine the vaccine efforts, but it is a theoretical fear as so far none have done so, despite the hype.

  5. Dear Mary, although I only have friends and family in Yorkshire but have never really lived there myself, I am homesick for it nonetheless, and can imagine how much more you suffer from not being able to go here.
My last visit was in 2019, and I can not see the next one happening before 2022.

  6. Dearest Mary,
It is fabulous for having this 'goal' ahead of you as you once again are healing from your PMR; it will help!
Yes, England has some wonderful areas.

    1. Yes, we must still make plans for the future - they are what keep us going - no long hours rocking on the porch here, just a quick break for a cup of tea!

  7. Hoping this works for you, even though my loved ones are scattered throughout the USA, not visiting or having them travel to Oregon has been more difficult than I ever imagined. We are planning a trip to Germany, hopefully in Summer 2022. Stay well ~~~

  8. Dear Mary,
I'm keeping fingers crossed that your September trip will come about. I know how much you want to see your homeland.
I'm still not sure that I will be able to make it to Sicily in September. When having to stand in line for 40 minutes just to prove your identity, then possibly, it would be a good idea to postpone once again.

    1. Gina, I'm concerned that your planned trip may not happen quite yet - but on the other hand don't give up quite yet, things could make a huge turn for the better perhaps. . . . .we just never know really do we!

  9. Time will fly and then you’ll get your trip, I’m sure. Far better to wait, as by Sept most of us over here will have had our ‘jabs’. It will be much safer for you. September is usually a pleasant month weather wise, too.

    1. Sal, tell them all to get their jabs please! Yes, we've often come in Sept. and Oct. and I actually love that time of year in the southwest. Just reading about the Dawlish railway line plan to prevent the cliff fall damage - interesting!

  11. My husband keeps proposing a trip but I keep procrastinating. We're vaccinated but I keep imagining new strains and more outbreaks. I need to snap out of it. Hope you make it home in September.

  12. I feel so sad for all those like you Mary who can't visit loved ones abroad - but I suppose we must all be thankful that we haven't gone down with the wretched Covid.

    1. We will now look forward to September - family and friends will still be there hopefully!
My thoughts are with you all 'down under' as life seems rather hectic currently with more virus variants and the political situation with a certain country!
BTW Trish - we are watching The Silent City (set in Canberra) very interesting!

  16. Yes, I can wait until Sept. Jackie - home is always home! Any chance you might like to try to meet up in London for a drink - we hope to have a couple of days there? It would be amazing to meet in person! Let's chat about that later.
