Scented ironing. . . . . . . .

Yesterday included catching up on a little pile ironing.
Nothing detailed and time consuming, just flat pillowcases,
tea towels, hand towels. . . . everyday items.
I really enjoy making them smooth, feel fresh, and look
neat and tidy on the linen closet shelf or in the kitchen drawer.
Winter means much less ironing when it comes to clothes.
The linen and cotton tops and bottoms are packed away until
Spring, warm sweaters and woolly items taking their place!

I like to use 'linen spray' - makes the iron run smoothly, takes out wrinkles
faster, and the fragrance can making sleeping especially pleasant
when you lay your weary head on a freshly scented pillow.

One of my favorites is old fashioned Eau de Cologne which reminds
 my of my dear grandmother.
This sparkling traditional citrus scent transports the senses to a slower
pace of life, similar to a journey through sun parched groves of heady
orange blossom. Lavender is also lovely of course.

I know we've talked about ironing before HERE some years ago,
and many of us shared personal feelings on ironing and some
 interesting stories.

Have a good Monday and a safe and pleasant week
despite the frightening updated COVID news here in the US,
and in many places around the world.
The weekend brought numbers we hoped would never be
seen so we must be even more diligent, especially
now the regular influenza season is upon us also.

Please stay safe.

  1. I am not a fan of ironing, but you seemed to find a way to make it pleasant! Take care and stay well.

  2. Dear Mary - your linen is really lovely and also so very you.
Despite the current virus situation, I am feeling really encouraged that there are now two seemingly successful vaccines on our immediate horizons.

  3. I don't do much ironing. The only thing I ever iron is if something truly needs it, like a piece of clothing. Once in awhile if I'm feeling indulgent, I'll iron our clean pillowcases. My mother irons a lot ~ pillowcases, napkins, tablecloths, etc. She even irons sheets if she has a guest staying overnight in the guest room! Her mother, my grandmother, used to iron literally everything, including socks and underwear!

  4. Dearest Mary,
Well, you and I are a lot alike in loving the ironing task and a collection of nice tea towels, table cloths, bed linens... To me that is pure luxury, you get the spa treatment right at home. I always place a bar of scented soap between the bed linens, learned that from my late Mom and yes, I also use linen spray!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  5. I'm a big ironer. When I was a child, I was giving the tea-towels, pillowcases and hankies to do. It was such a thrill, I'd labour over each one to make them perfect. My Mum was a genius, really, as it was the era of space-age synthetics and apart from school uniforms, I don't think there was anything left for her to do! I still start the pile with the trio of Easies, like an Entrée, then work up to the Main Course of sheets and shirts etc, then Dessert is when I do the cool press stuff like fiddly blouses and woollens. I use a tailor's ham and whatnot, as well. I make up my own linen spray sometimes by squirting some Hermès grapefruit-y E-de-C into the water bottle. Delightfully citrus! Can you tell I love to iron, haha!!

    1. You and I would make great ironing buddies - imagine the conversations we could have re: ironing, our wonderful mums who taught us well, school uniforms (best thing ever for school children, IMO!), and always fragrant, wherever/however used, Eau de Cologne!
      Great comment dear, thank you.

  6. Dearest Mary,
Guess I did comment here but I wanted to add the memory of Marks & Spencer, which is written on your bottle... https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2019/03/my-visit-to-castle-howard-minster-of.html
My suit from Marks & Spencer.

  7. I must have not yet been around to read your blog when you posted about ironing before, because I could not find a comment of mine on that post.
Anyway, I enjoy ironing! It gives my hands something useful to do, with tangible and visible results, while my mind can go wandering... quite the opposite of what my daily work consists of, where my mind has to be engaged in all sorts of stuff but my hands only touch the keyboard and the mouse.
I love listening to the radio while ironing, and even do O.K.'s ironing when I spend the weekend at his place. He never asks me to, it is me who wants to do that - partly because I see it as my contribution to the running of his household on weekends, but mostly because I enjoy it.
So far, I have never used scented sprays for ironing, but I love the scent of lavender - sweetly old-fashioned, clean and relaxing.

    1. Your O.K is so fortunate to have you Meike - and I know he must be a lovely guy!
Linen sprays are also great for ironing cottons too! I always iron Bob's shirts and use some around the collar/shoulder area.

  8. I love linen sprays Mary. Can you get M&S in the States ? I vaguely remember them opening a store over there. I used to have a lovely Linen spray from L'Occitane but they don't make it anymore ... that happens to lots of things that I like !!! When M&S first started doing food, they had the most AMAZING calamari salad that you ate cold .... it tasted like something from a really classy restaurant and then, they stopped it !! I'm going to see if the M&S over here has the linen spray !!!! XXXX

    1. No Jackie, M&S has never had stores in the US - apparently trading here has always been disallowed from what I've heard! They are in Canada though.
I stock up on many items from them when home - this spray was actually purchased years back and I was really disappointed when it was no longer available. Check though, maybe it has returned by now. When there last year I did buy their Grapefruit & Ginger Room and Linen spray in a round glass bottle (I still prefer glass to plastic - think the perfume lasts much longer in glass), it's really pleasant also.

  9. Dear Mary,
I enjoy ironing, especially with my Miele ironing machine. It's getting the linens ready that I don't like. They are either too dry or too wet. I have a friend who has a Miele Dryer which cuts of drying when linens have just the right moisture content.

  10. That Miele dryer sounds awesome - I always have to scuttle to the dryer and keep checking so I don't over dry linens. IF I do, I dampen down with a spray bottle of water, roll up tight and put in the freezer for a while - they are then evenly damp and ready to iron with a a spray of fragrance!
All this must be a senior thing - I don't think younger generations even iron!
    Mary -

  11. Hi dear! Oh you know I do too enjoy ironing chores :) That linen spray seems to be lovely. Missing you. Hope everyone is doing well. xx

  12. I do love ironing, but haven't used spray in a long time. Today in the mail I received some herbal scents to put in an diffuser in my laundry room since there is also the kitty litter and soon to be home gym, the scents will help.
