Keeping calm at any time......................

Keep Calm and Carry On - click to watch the Video
We've all seen these iconic words over the past couple of years. Do you know the real story behind this wonderful British poster from the Second World War?
Watch this great video featuring Barter Books, a unique bookshop in the north of England where the poster was discovered in 2000. The original WWII film footage is interesting and the bookshop looks amazing - lucky those who live in Northumberland and can visit. Just when we are losing mega-bookstores, independent bookshops at last have a chance of returning to the forefront. Atmosphere, including a tearoom and fireplace, and a dedicated book-loving staff, make this a place I would love to visit.

Meanwhile I'm enjoying my coffee this morning in my special 'Keep Calm' mug, a lovely gift from a friend. Life is anything but calm actually.....I'm getting ready to travel again in just a week's time. I have a lot to do to get ready.....will tell you where later tomorrow!

  1. I don't know how you do it! I have to travel to Hartford for 5 weeks to work on a show and I'm overwhelmed. You manage to travel all the time with grace and style!

  2. I am looking forward to your new adventures! Can't wait to travel with you via your posts.

  3. Welcome home, Mary. I am so glad you got your water issue resolved. And, how wonderful that you had such pretty blooms to welcome you.

Wow, look at you ziplining. I think it must be so much fun!

I had read the story about these famous words. They are a clear demonstration of the way people bond in crisis.

  4. Mary, thanks for the history behind Keep Calm..... Can't wait to find out where you will be headed next-the world traveler!!

  5. Oh thank you for sharing this video! I knew these words were from WW2 and Sir Winston Churchill but didn't know anything about the Barters Books shop and the finding of the poster. What a wonderful shop! I can't wait to hear where you're off to now. Have a great day. Hugs, Pamela

  6. As a thank you gift for organising the Quimper Club annual meeting in Savannah 2010 I received a large canvas with these iconic words from the Club President. She knew that it had been my mantra throughout the many months preceding!
    Love that mug!
Can't wait to hear more about your upcoming trip and see what you're packing in the suitcase this time.

  7. On 'The Antiques Roadshow' a few weeks ago they were amazed when a lady turned up with loads of those posters most in perfect condition that her Dad had saved from WWII, and the value? ..........£1000 EACH!
Where on earth do you get all your energy from Mary?

  8. I actually have wondered where that phrase came from. Thanks! I enjoyed watching the video. What a special bookstore. I would love visiting it also. Enjoy preparing for your trip with a calm heart.

  9. Hello Mary! I found this very interesting and spent some time in the bookstore's website looking around. That is a bookstore after my own heart!

  10. Love this. I have that mug too and the bottom pic is my icon on Pinterest! :) Thanks so much for the video. I want to visit there eventually. I think I'd like to schedule a whole day just for that bookstore! Have a wonderful time on your next trip!

  11. the title of your blog is so appropriate-what a beautiful place you have created here! I have the same keep calm poster in gray hanging in an ornate white frame that reminds me every day to do just that!lol the story behind it is amazing isn't it? :) chris

  12. I've just returned from six days in Arizona ... it was fun but the travel part was tiring. Can't wait to see what's next on your agenda ......
