The January days ahead -

With apologies to Hieronymus Bosch, this is my own small winter
'garden of earthly delights.'  Simple, manageable, pleasant to view
in the dining room now devoid of somewhat bright and dazzling
Christmas decor, and giving me hope I will soon have amaryllis
blooming and sharing exquisite flowers on dreary days. . . . .which
are possibly heading our way according to the forecast.

We could get a long awaited light snowfall tomorrow morning when this
crazy 'heatwave' ends and a cold front blasts through. It was 80F yesterday
and we cranked up the a/c after taking down outdoor Christmas decor, other
than the tree in the gazebo which I like to leave up a while longer. Then
we tackled the indoor decorations, wrapping in tissue, packing carefully
into green boxes and stashing in the far reaches of the attic in hopes they
will make their way out come next December!

  1. My Mum and O.K.‘s Mum each have amaryllis at home this time of year, and this year, they seem to be particularly beautiful with an abundance of blooms.
In my flat, all is as I have left it - my Cristmas decor will go on or after the 6th, depending on what day O.K. and I will drive back to Ludwigsburg.

  2. Hello Mary,
Most of the decorations came down here yesterday, too. I'm leaving the red velvet cushions in the living room for awhile, and some other touches. My amaryllis is not yet blooming, but I'm hopeful it will soon. Our beautiful snow is melting and the temperature is returning to a more normal range. A new year lies ahead, full of opportunities and ???

  3. After an unexpectedly difficultly December - as much logistical as anything - I'm finally catching up on some of my favourite blogs to wish their authors a happy new year and say thanks for reading and commenting on mine. In your case its especially pleasing to have made virtual friendship too - your interest in my writing is humbling and real pleasure. I do so hope next year brings us better times and plenty of words (and pictures) to inspire and entertain.
Very best wishes for a joyful year.

  4. Dearest Mary,
Hieronymus Bosch was a famous Dutch painter from the adjacent Province where I am from.
Pieter was all excited this morning to discover that his pelleted seeds had sprouted!
I've ordered 300 seeds for our bay window fiberglass boxes in the spring.
This way, Pieter can assess how much time it takes...
It is a good thing for getting ready for spring and plants are bringing so much joy.
We too had 80s here and needed to turn the cooling back on, mainly for getting rid of the moisture in the air.
That is the dual function of an airconditioning, de-humidifying the air and making it a far healthier environment for human beings to live in.
Today is a wet day and heavy thunderstorms right now... Hope our gazebo will be dry tomorrow wo the painters can finish their 2nd layer and then do the three entrance doors.
Then I will be on the move, cleaning up. My mid-back is not yet normal but hoping it soon will be painless.
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  6. 80 degrees and the AC on this time of year? I can't imagine! We just got 4" of snow yesterday and today was a whopping 20 degrees. I didn't even poke my nose outside. ;-)

  7. Wow, you're having crazy weather, Mary! That's a pleasant Sydney summer temperature. I expect all your sun frocks were packed away - no wonder you needed a shot of air conditioning. Meanwhile, the decorations remain firmly in place here for a goodly while yet :)

  8. Oh I see those bulbs plumping. I may have to go find more amaryllis when my final blooms fade. There are no leaves, just a stalk. Eighty degrees sounds off, but nice. Still, it is mild here these days with lots of rain and fog and temps in the mid thirties.

  9. Happy New Year, Mary. 80F is a surprising temperature - just converted it to 26C, which is about what it is here this morning! After weeks of high Summer Sizzle, we are having a bit of a cool change, and a small cyclone off the coast. Love your amaryllis collection, and I see a plump bulb there, soon to burst forth. I am sure you will see a fine display. xx

I wish you a healthy and peaceful New Year.
You are a good plant keeper. You will see beautiful flowers in spring. Thanks for your information of garlics.
